Canonical Launches ‘Ubuntu Voice’ Initiative, Aims to Harness User Feedback
[source: http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2013/09/canonical-launch-ubuntu-voice-initiative]
Canonical has today launched a new initiative designed to help shape the future of Ubuntu, the way users want it.
‘Ubuntu Voice’ – which is being described as a ‘User Experience Network‘ – aims to harness the opinions and enthusiasm of Ubuntu users into a focused pool of able & willing testers.
Those opting-in to the group must agree to keep the feedback and the news they receive from Canonical confidential. But as an incentive for participating in the program (apart from being able to shape something used by a reported 20 million users) there will be perks and ‘Ubuntu goody lucky draw[s]‘ along the way.
UbuntuVoice is just the latest in a long-line of ways that users can participate in the Ubuntu project. Previous initiatives have included Ubuntu Brainstorm, infrequent surveys and polls and even paid physical ‘user testing’ days.
More traditional (and often over-looked) methods – like submitting bug reports and helping with translations – also help users give feedback on the OS and its features.

The second Beta release of the upcoming GNOME 3.10 desktop environment has been announced last evening, September 5, by Javier Jardón Cabezas from the GNOME release team.
As we've reported in our in-depth article about the changes brought by the GNOME developers in the latest Beta version of the GNOME-Shell 3.10 package, a new system status area will be implemented in GNOME 3.10.
As you can see from the screenshot below (thanks to Allan Day), the entire design of the system status area has been completely revamped, offering a single menu for all the indicators (sound, Wi-Fi, battery, bluetooth, etc.).
On the currently stable version of the GNOME desktop environment, we found ourselves opening a new panel for each indicator (see the first screenshot for details) every time we want to modify or view something.
Starting with GNOME 3.10, which will arrive on September 25, 2013, users will find all the indicators mentioned above into a single panel, which will drastically improve the way you interact with your GNOME desktop.

The new system status area will not only unify all the indicators, but it will also display only information about things you care about. With a single mouse click you will be able to see how much time (percentage is also displayed) you have left on your laptop's battery, connect to mobile broadband or Wi-Fi networks, as well as to change the volume and brightness.
The new system panel, which can be tested right now via the GNOME 3.10 Beta 2 release, also includes shortcuts for the Lock, Shutdown, Restart, Log Out, and Change User functions, as well as for the GNOME Control Panel app.

Download GNOME 3.10 Beta 2 right now from Softpedia. Remember that this is a beta version and it should NOT be installed on production machines. It is intended for testing purposes only.

Moreover, the Dash is now able to reload favorites when installed applications change, the Overview mode is no longer opened after closing the last window on workspace, the FocusApp DBus method has been added, a new app picker design has been implemented, the clickable area of page indicators has been extended, and the moving controls when displaying messages have been fixed.

[source: http://news.softpedia.com/news/New-Kernel-Vulnerabilities-Affect-Ubuntu-10-04-LTS-381884.shtml]
Canonical has announced a few days ago, in a security notice, that a new Linux kernel update is available for its Ubuntu 10.04 LTS (Lucid Lynx) operating system, fixing four vulnerabilities discovered in the Linux kernel packages by various developers.
These are the four kernel vulnerabilities that affect the Ubuntu 10.04 LTS (Lucid Lynx) distribution: CVE-2013-1060, CVE-2013-1943, CVE-2013-2206, and CVE-2013-4162.
You can click on each one to see how it affects your system, or go here for in-depth descriptions, as it affects other Linux operating systems as well.
The security flaws can be fixed if you upgrade your system(s) to the linux-image-2.6.32-51 (2.6.32-51.113) package(s). To apply the update, run the Update Manager application or follow these instructions: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Security/Upgrades.
Don't forget to reboot your computer after the upgrade! We remind everyone that Ubuntu 12.10, Ubuntu 13.04 and Ubuntu 12.04 LTS also receive kernel updates.

Ubuntu further extends its openness by launching UbuntuVoice, official open-for-participation user experience network
[source: http://iloveubuntu.net/ubuntu-further-extends-its-openness-launching-ubuntuvoice-official-open-participation-user]
Ubuntu is a massive globally-scaled project, going beyond borders, age, nationality and social status, uniting 20 million users into an area where friendship, affection and performance are acting as the ground on which the Ubuntu operating system firmly stands.
Ubuntu is a user-centric OS, attribute noticed and publicly expressed by Linus Torvalds, too, centering the user's needs, demands, feedback into carefully-crafted interaction behaviors, optimized interfaces and beautiful patterns.
The Ubuntu designer Tingting Zhao has announced the exciting availability of UbuntuVoice, essentially, an official user-experience network where users are to provide feedback towards Ubuntu's apps, products, goals, etc.
Basically, via UbuntuVoice, the accepted users will have the unique opportunity of shaping Ubuntu at its very core, in the sense of, via their provided feedback, helping the designers forming, strengthening and refining upcoming components/areas of Ubuntu.
The interested-to-participate users are to characterize themselves as wanting to:
"be the voice of over 20 million Ubuntu users. You will have the opportunities to take part in a variety of Ubuntu user research with different products, and help shape the Ubuntu experience. You choose the ones that you are interested in"
"stay up to date with Ubuntu. Get periodic updates (every two months) via email, such as what designers are working on, how feedback is used, and how users behave when interacting with technology"
"get a little something extra. Some of our research will come with an incentive, or in the form of a ‘Ubuntu goody’ lucky draw, and some research will be voluntary"
In order to be a part of UbuntuVoice, the users are to navigate to https://docs.google.com/a/canonical.com/forms/d/1xB7vRZiQDcEVCQX-HVqExj0...
UbuntuVoice is yet-another evidence of Ubuntu's openness towards the user, proving its deep serious interest for the user's feedback into a magnificent creation environment where power, solidity and beauty are serving millions of users all over the world.
