A Visual History Of The Last 20 Years Of Open Source Code
==========
Many people forget that Emacs Lisp was once one of the most used open source programming languages.
----------
The rise in popularity of modern connected computing can be traced to the late 1980s and early 1990s. The personal computer and later the World Wide Web combined to create an unprecedented explosion in the availability of information and the ability to immediately connect to our fellow humans.
![](http://readwrite.com/files/opencola_wikipedia.jpg)

To the layman, it may seem like magic. But to the people who actually built these systems, using programming languages to manipulate how computers, servers, the Web and other services function just as they were meant to.
Most of these programming languages are open, meaning that anybody can use them and add to their functionality. But just as computing has significantly evolved in the last 20 years, so too have the programming languages that developers use to make those computers work. Nothing is static, everything is always evolving.
For instance, did you know that one of the most popular open source programming languages in 1993 was Emacs Lisp? For those of you that have never heard of an Emacs, it is a text editor very popular created by free-software guru Richard Stallman that is used among the Linux developer crowd. Because of its extensibility, a lot of programmers use it to create code, because there aren't a lot of full-fledged integrated developer environments (IDEs) for Linux and what few there are tend to be eschewed. Emacs Lisp is a derivative of the older Lisp programming language.
The C programming language was the most popular open source code in 1993 with 51% of total commits in the first quarter that year. Make, a [utility that automatically builds executable programs and libraries from source code][1] for Unix developers, was used by 6% of developers in 1993.
In the first quarter of 2013, Java was the most used open source code with 12%. C++ registered 11% while HTML had 10%.
All of these open source programming languages would have influence on what was to come. C has influenced the evolution of languages like C++, Python, Javascript and Perl. Java helped form the foundations for C# while Python has influenced Ruby.
The evolution will continue. In 1993 there were nearly 40 open source programming languages. In 2013 there are almost 100 and new ideas are being created every day.
Check out the infographic from mobile cloud services company [Kinvey][2] charting the last 20 years of open source code. Data for the infographic was pooled from [Ohloh.net][3] and [Black Duck Software][4].
[Kinvey notes][5]:
> We were able to visualize the percentage of total commits in a given quarter for the top 16 programming languages from 1993 until today. We hope youll find this image—a provocative pattern of dips and spikes—to be as interesting as we do. It truly shows how dynamic the world of programming is. Weve also included a few graphs on other interesting data points: total number of languages by year, average lines of code per commit, and tracking which languages influenced the development of others.

CLEX A Versatile Command Line File Manager With Integrated Command Prompt
===========
Whether you are a system administrator or a normal command line user, hopping between file manager and command line can get frustrating some times. At some time or the other, you tend to look at some command line alternative to the graphical file manager that you use.
Chances are that youll find a decent command line manager but that would still require switching between file manager window and your command prompt window. So the question remains, is there a file manager that combines file explorer and command prompt in a single window? The answer is yes and the file manager is **CLEX**.
![](http://mylinuxbook.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/clex-main.png)
## CLEX The Command Line File Manager ##
Clex is a command line based file manager that has a nice little user interface and provides a lot of options for file management. The main advantage of this file manager is that it also provides a command prompt (in the same window) through which you can run regular commands.
**NOTE** All the examples presented here are tested on Ubuntu 13.04.
**A Brief Tutorial**
Here is the Clex UI when it was first executed on my machine:
![](http://mylinuxbook.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/clex-1.png)
So you can see that all the files and directories in the current working directory (**/home/himanshu/** in this case) were displayed in the upper half of the window. You can use the up and down arrow keys to select a file or a directory and press enter to get inside a directory.
In the lower half of the window, the file manager provides a command line prompt (bash prompt in my case). Any installed command line utility can be executed from here.
For example, to open an image file Ubuntu.png, the arrow keys were used to select it first :
![](http://mylinuxbook.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/clex-2.png)
Then, an installed image viewer (gthumb in my case) was used (with Ubuntu.png as argument) through command prompt.
![](http://mylinuxbook.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/clex-3.png)
The image viewer program gthumb displayed the image as soon as the complete command was executed.
![](http://mylinuxbook.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/clex-4.png)
Besides, Clex also provides a range of other useful options which can be accessed by pressing Alt+M.
![](http://mylinuxbook.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/clex-5.png)
So you can use these options to change the current working directory, add bookmarks, view command history, sort file names, compare directories etc.
Here is a snapshot when command history option was used :
![](http://mylinuxbook.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/clex-6.png)
Similarly you can use other options as per your requirement.
**NOTE** Use Alt+q to quit Clex.
**Download/Install**
Here are some of the useful links related to Clex file manager:
- [Home Page](http://www.clex.sk/about.html)
- [Download](http://www.clex.sk/download/)
- [Documentation](http://www.clex.sk/help/file_intro.html)
Ubuntu users can directly download and install this software using Ubuntu Software Centre. The version used for this review was 3.15.
**Pros**
- Integration of file explorer and command line prompt in the same window
- Lots of options like directory comparison, file name sorting, command line history etc
- Good online documentation
**Cons**
- Depends on CURSES library with wide character support. This may cause problems while building from source.
- Has some start-up problems, displays the following warning every-time it is launched :
![](http://mylinuxbook.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/clex-warning.png)
**Conclusion**
Clex is certainly a feature rich command line file manager. The integration with command prompt is its USP. Minor hiccups apart, it is a time-saving utility that demands a bit of practice to get used to it.

CalculusTouch hits 1.0 version
==========
[CalculusTouch](https://launchpad.net/calculustouch) is a handy Ubuntu SDK application incarnating calculus-specific capabilities into a polished worked-on-detail interface.
Launching CalculusTouch, presents a good-looking mathematical utility featuring a sober-yet-elegant dark background and orange buttons, mix relaxing the eye, while working the brain.
CalculusTouch divides its capabilities in two main areas:
- `Symbolic Calculations` where the user is able to utilize `Evaluate, Derive, Integrate, Taylor Expansion`, etc, as applied to the editable `Expression` field
- `Function Plot` rendering written-by-user expression as accurate visual constructions
CalculusTouch has reached **version 1.0**, strengthening its previously-introduced features into a more stable version, while adding various minor fixes and optimizations.
The 1.0 version comes to meet the user's needs in calculus operations with a more solid feel.
CalculusTouch's usage has a built-in quality of user-friendliness, (for example) performing a symbolic calculation is as simple as typing an expression in the `Expression` field and hitting a desired button (such as `Derive`, etc), action that renders the result with a fancy look & feel into a dedicated white-ish area.

How Linux defenders attack bad software patents before theyre approved
================================================================================
Group identifies dangerous patents and tries to cut them down to size.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
![](http://cdn.arstechnica.net/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/linux-penguin.jpg)
Despite the rise in the number of patent trolls launching lawsuits affecting open source software, there are some glimmers of hope. The America Invents Act that was signed into law in September 2011 has provided new ways to prevent the issuance of over-broad software patents that could fuel future lawsuits.
In a session at LinuxCon today, [Linux Defenders][1] director Andrea Casillas explained how the group is using rights granted by the new law to fight patent applications. A project of the Open Invention Network, Software Freedom Law Center, and Linux Foundation, Linux Defenders examines the 6,000 new patent applications published each week, attempting to identify those that are potentially threatening to Linux and open source. Then, the group looks for prior art that would invalidate at least some of the claims in the patents.
The next step is working with Linux technologists to file defensive publications, which are not patents themselves but describe an invention and place it in the public record, preventing new patents from being granted that cover the same technology. These are typically two- to three-page descriptions of the technology, which the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) examiners can read when conducting their review of prior art that might invalidate or limit the scope of a new patent application. Linux Defenders has filed about 200 of these defensive publications.
"We'll work with authors or inventors or developers to take submissions, edit them, and work hand in hand with them to make these publications more effective," Casillas said, urging the Linux community to help the group identify dangerous patents and find prior art.
Defensive publications are an old strategy, but it's become more accessible to the public because of the America Invents Act, Casillas explained. "This is the first time examiners have welcomed the public interaction," she said. "Any individual can electronically submit up to three pieces of prior art at no cost per application."
Linux Defenders has filed defensive publications related to patent applications from Microsoft, Apple, and others. Generally, Casillas said defensive publications aren't going to force a company to abandon a patent application. Rather, they might force the company to limit the scope of the patent application's claims.
When asked if Linux Defenders could name examples of patent applications that were limited because of this process, Casillas and her colleagues said they're still working on a method of measuring its effectiveness. Within 6 to 9 months, they expect to implement a tool that lets them track when patent examiners use the defensive publications in the patent review process.
Linux Defenders also targets patents that have already been issued, but Casillas noted that the legal standard for invalidating patents after they're awarded is very high.
**One patent lawsuit “could make Red Hat go away”**
In a separate session at LinuxCon yesterday, Red Hat's Fedora engineering manager Tom Callaway discussed legal threats to open source.
Red Hat has criticized patent trolls and taken many steps to [protect itself and its customers from them][2]. Callaway said the threat can't be understated. "I do not overestimate this. Red Hat is not a small company in our industry, in open source. We're possibly the biggest. One good loss at trial on a serious set of patents could make Red Hat go away. It would be gone. That's the seriousness of patents and that's how chilling they are on our industry," he said.
In all likelihood, Red Hat isn't going anywhere. The company has a good track record defending itself and its customers in court against patent trolls. It indemnifies customers against lawsuits as part of its software subscription program, and it has built up a portfolio of defensive patents.
While paid subscriptions to Red Hat Enterprise Linux entitle customers to extra protection, Red Hat is also working on making sure Fedora—which costs users nothing—is protected from legal trouble. The company does that by analyzing all the code and making sure every piece is licensed properly, sometimes removing and replacing problematic code. This has negative consequences for the software. "We have this problem a lot in Fedora. Patents keep us from doing the things that we want to do," Callaway said.
In a recent case involving Rackspace and Red Hat, a company called Uniloc tried to get money from Rackspace for using Red Hat's Linux-based servers. Uniloc's case was thrown out, with the judge saying its patent claim is invalid because it describes a relatively simple math operation.
But defending those cases costs money, and even Red Hat has occasionally paid money to patent trolls to settle cases without going to trial.
Callaway expressed frustration about over-broad patents. Some patents are "so vague they could mean anything," he said. "They could be applied to almost anything, and the patent trolls are betting on that, that you won't fight it."
**Helping patent examiners identify bad patents**
Those over-broad patents, again, are what Linux Defenders is trying to stop. Vague patents often get approved in part because patent examiners spend no more than 20 hours on each application, Casillas said.
The amount of time is "pretty staggering considering how long the process takes and how important the issuance of a patent can be," she said. The 20 hours "includes going through the application, making sure it complies with formatting, your basic legal requirements, but also determining the scope of the invention."
The examiner spends about seven to eight hours searching for prior art, whether in the form of patents or other publicly available descriptions of technology, she said.
By submitting defensive publications, complete with tags making them more easily discoverable by patent examiners, Linux Defenders hopes to make the USPTO more effective.
"We're not adding to their increasing workload," Casillas said. "We're helping them with these relevant publications."

Indicator-Synapse Brings Spotlight-Like Search Bar to Linux
===========================================================
![img](http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/spotlightsynapse.jpg "spotlightsynapse")
**Take a semantic Zeitgeist-powered application/file launcher and bind it to the panel. What do you get? Something worth putting in the spotlight, thats what.**
_Indicator-Synapse_ is a new attempt at presenting results from the [powerful application/file launcher Synapse][1].
Comparisons with Apples Spotlight search feature are somewhat valid. Both are menu based search tools that show a top hit and results from files, applications and the web.
But you dont need to be running a Mac-themed Linux distro to use it (though Im sure it looks great on Pear OS, where itll be rocking up as default). It runs just fine on Ubuntu and its siblings.
###Unity Dash Does The Same, Right?
The need for such a tool on the Unity desktop is lessened somewhat given the versatility of the Dash, but some of you might like it anyway.
Drawback being that you cant open it with a keyboard shortcut (not least one that I can find). That makes it a little less useful; being able to tap a key combo and start searching without needing to use the mouse is what makes Spotlight on OS X (and the Unity Dash) so handy.
But still, early days.
###Install Indicator Synapse in Ubuntu
Indicator-Search is currently in development so only install it if youre okay with bugs, crashes and unexpected behaviour.
Installing it requires adding two PPAs to your software sources. The first contains builds of Indicator Synapse for Ubuntu 12.04 & 13.04. The second has a dependency needed by the app that isnt present in its own PPA.
Open a new Terminal window and enter:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:elementary-os/unstable-upstream
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:birdie-team/stable
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install indicator-synapse libkeybinder-3.0-0
Now search for Indicator-Synapse in the Dash and launch.
To remove the application simply search for indicator synapse in the Ubuntu Software Center, click on its listing, then the remove button

在CentOS 6.4上安装Ampache流媒体服务
==========
[Ampache][2] is a a web based audio/video streaming software and file manager. It allows you to access your music & videos from anywhere, using almost any internet enabled device. It isnt a media organizer, it just use the existing organized media files in a useful way. So you must be aware of managing and organizing the media files.
**Scenario**
This how-to was tested on CentOS 6.4, although it should work on almost all RHEL based systems. In this how-to, my test box hostname and IP address are **server.unixmen.com** and **192.168.1.201/24**. Change these values with your own where it appropriate.
**Prerequisites**
Your server should have installed and configured with Apache, MySQL and PHP(LAMP). Refer any one of the following links to setup LAMP server.
- Install LAMP (Apache, MariaDB, PHP) Server On CentOS 6.4.
or
- Install LAMP (Apache, MySQL, PHP) Server On CentOS 6.4.
And install the following PHP modules too.
# yum install php-mcrypt php-pdo php-cli php-mysql php-gd php-xml libtool-ltdl mhash mcrypt -y
**Create Database and User for Ampache**
For instance, here i am going to create a database called “**ampachedb**” and database user called “**ampache**” with password “**centos**”. You can define database and user as per your liking.
# mysql -u root -p
Enter password:
Welcome to the MariaDB monitor. Commands end with ; or \g.
Your MariaDB connection id is 3
Server version: 5.5.31-MariaDB MariaDB Server
Copyright (c) 2000, 2013, Oracle, Monty Program Ab and others.
Type 'help;' or '\h' for help. Type '\c' to clear the current input statement.
MariaDB [(none)]> create database ampachedb;
Query OK, 1 row affected (0.02 sec)
MariaDB [(none)]> GRANT ALL ON ampachedb.* TO ampacheuser@localhost IDENTIFIED BY 'centos';
Query OK, 0 rows affected (0.01 sec)
MariaDB [(none)]> flush privileges;
Query OK, 0 rows affected (0.00 sec)
MariaDB [(none)]> exit
Bye
**Adjust Firewall/Router Settings**
Allow the apache default port “80″ through iptables/router. Edit file /etc/sysconfig/iptables,
# vi /etc/sysconfig/iptables
Add the following line.
-A INPUT -p tcp -m state --state NEW --dport 80 -j ACCEPT
Now restart the iptables service.
# /etc/init.d/iptables restart
**Getting Ampache**
Download the latest version of [Ampache here][3] or enter the following command to download it from your terminal.
# wget https://github.com/ampache/ampache/archive/3.6-alpha6.zip
**Note:** Here you can host your streaming media server site in two methods.
1. Directly from the web root folder, so that you can access your website by navigating to **http://domain-name/**.
2. Alternatively create a sub directory in web root folder and host website from the sub-directory i.e you can access your website using URL **http://domain-name/sub-directory-name**.
Here, for testing purpose, i am going to host my streaming site under a sub directory.
Extract the downloaded file using command:
# tar -zxvf 3.6-alpha6
Move the contents to apache web root.
# mv ampache-3.6-alpha6/ /var/www/html/ampache
Set the write permissions to ampache/config directory.
# chmod -R 777 /var/www/html/ampache/config/
**Begin Installation**
Open up browser and type **http://domain-name/ampache** or **http://ip-address/ampache** in the address bar.
The following should appear. Click **Start configuration**.

Is '3 The Latest Member of Canonicals Carrier Advisory Group?
===============================================================
Mobile Network 3 appears to be the latest addition to Canonicals Carrier Advisory Group.
![img](http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/3-logo1.jpg)
The companys logo appears on the CAG section of the official Ubuntu website.
But, this appearance aside, official confirmation of CAG membership by either 3 or Canonical has yet to be made.
###About 3
Three is far from being the biggest mobile network in the UK, where it has picked up nearly 9 million customers since launching as the nations first 3G service back in 2003.
But worldwide the network has a more notable presence, with the [Hutchison Whampoa][1]-owned company operating in several other countries, including Ireland, Austria, and Hong Kong.
###About the CAG
The CAG allows mobile networks interested in Ubuntu Touch for mobiles the chance to preview, discuss and influence development.
Membership of the CAG is not the same as committing to offer devices. That said, members do get confidential information on handsets, release dates and other launch information to help persuade them to do so.
If the addition of 3 is confirmed then it will be joining [a 13-strong list of carriers who have shown interest][2] in the fledgling upstart OS.

Libreoffice 4.1.1 Released, Install It On Ubuntu And Linux Mint
===============================================================
Writer, Calc, Impress, Draw, Math and Base. These are six feature-rich applications that LibreOffice suit offers to you for your document and data processing needs. What is LibreOffice? I know this question is very easy to answer for most of the unixmen readers, but since our fans keep growing everyday I guess there are many people that have no idea about Linux and Open Source, so l feel I have to give some information about LibreOffice.
LibreOffice is an open-source, simple and powerful office suite for Linux, Windows OS and Mac OS users. There are many volunteers working and helping the LibreOffice project. These volunteers have different roles, from engineering tasks to community support and creative work. Now it is time for some news.
[LibreOffice 4.1.1][1] is released. This release of LibreOffice 4.1.1 comes with a large number of improved features and bug fixes. LibreOffice 4.1.1 supports legacy binary StarOffice files and export to legacy Word and Excel. An interesting bug fixed is fdo#67388, in which files in .deb packages werent owned by root:root.
**New Features and Fixes**
- Turning off Same content on first page does not reflect in UI
- Cant select other fill than color in Writer > Drawing functions
- REPORTBUILDER The labels displayed in some options lists do not match the functionality
- 4.1 segfaults when checking for extension updates
- FILESAVE: Saving to XLS format omits to save formula expressions of cells where the formula result is an error
- Style font is not stored for ODG and ODP files: after editing a style, closing and reponening, it is changed
- cant save new autocorrect entries
- MAILMERGE: Pre-Defined Labels Contain No Format Info in LO 4.1.0.4
- EDITING: BUG: calc crashes on spell check
- soffice.bin segfault in libvclplug_gtklo.so killed by signal 11 (SIGSEGV)
- the GCJ Java variant has known issues with LibreOffice, we advise to e.g. use OpenJDK instead.
- LibreOffice 4.x drops a few long-deprecated features, including support for legacy binary StarOffice files, export to legacy Word and Excel (version 6.0/95), and legacy ODMA document management.
- Some menu entries have changed or added. If you miss something, that may be due to the use of customised menu settings from your previous LibreOffice installation.
Now what about the installation of LibreOffice 4.1.1? Ok, To Install LibreOffice in Ubuntu/Linux Mint open Terminal and copy the following commands in the Terminal:
$ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:libreoffice/libreoffice-4-1
$ sudo apt-get update
$ sudo apt-get install libreoffice

[StartUbuntu](https://launchpad.net/startubuntu) is an interesting full-of-potential initiative created by third-party users concerned with the now's OS-usage percentages at a global scale, project designed in mind with pushing Ubuntu into the hands of more and more users.
A definitely exciting aspect of the StartUbuntu project is its clarity and sharp focus, meaning, the project aims at attracting users from Windows XP via a handy strategy: offering the full Ubuntu family of flavors to users of Windows XP seeking to change their OS.
The Ubuntu alternative is to be offered to former XP users due to XP's end-of-life reaching in April 8th, 2014 (and thus its users looking for a new OS).
![](http://iloveubuntu.net/pictures_me/startubuntu%20version%202.png)
The StartUbuntu project has just been resurrected, moving itself to version 2 of the project with refreshed goals and more strengthened precisely-conceived action phases, including:
- phase 0 (define the project and clearly expose its goals in the open)
- phase 1 (build an open-for-participation team)
- phase 2 (strengthen communication means within the newly-created team)
- phase 3 (incarnating informations about why Ubuntu is better and more suitable for users, as compared against its proprietary competition)
- phase 4 (approach and engage with potentially-useful communities, foundations, projects, etc, in order to solidify the manner of reaching XP users)
- phase 5 (reaching the actual XP users)
- phase 6 (further continue and expand the previously-mentioned actions)
The StartUbuntu project is open to every user interested in spreading Ubuntu, participation and complete details available on [https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StartUbuntu](https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StartUbuntu)

MineSweeper Touch enriched with beautiful Suru elements
================================================================================
Design is a vital part of Ubuntu's next-generation components, design being progressively yet-already-visible implemented in areas, elements, widgets, etc, overall design energy taking the next-generation components of Ubuntu to a superior, modern, innovative level.
Part of the official design process is Suru, essentially, a set of visual patterns expressed through colored backgrounds, interesting shapes and chic, stylish blocks, resulting (when utilized) truly beautiful applications.
Suru is a first-class citizen in the official core applications, yet, there are also third-party applications already using various Suru variations, among which MineSweeper Touch.
[MineSweeper Touch](https://launchpad.net/minesweeper-touch) is a now-fancy game incarnating the lovely classic MineSweeper game into an Ubuntu SDK interface; recently, MineSweeper Touch was enriched with a definitely interesting look & feel, incorporating the modern Suru style into its views.
The result: launching MineSweeper Touch, the user is to notice the purple background sustaining the rounded red-to-purple square blocks, white-ish when-unveiled blocks, distinct container for blocks, as well as carved areas where the game's details are exposed.

![](http://iloveubuntu.net/pictures_me/MineSweeper%20Touch%20game%20lost.png)
The implementation of Suru style takes the minesweeper game to a superior level in terms of perception and identity, pleasing the eye with beauty while challenging the brain with its action.

##Red Hat and Intel Working Closely to Bring Wayland as Default for Fedora 21##
**Red Hat and Intel developers are now working closely together to bring Wayland support in GNOME and they are hoping its going to be ready to ship in Fedora 21.**
The Ubuntu secret plan to conquer the FOSS world has been foiled by Intel with its announcement, at least for now, but the true plans of the Intel developers have been revealed.
If we remove the drama, its actually not a secret that Intel has invested heavily in Waylands future. Its developers are now working closely with Red Hat to make the GNOME Shell act as a compositor.
“So our team here at Red Hat have been working intensively with our counterparts at Intel to merge and stabilize the patches to enable Wayland support in GNOME and at the same time looking into what further improvements are needed in the stack,” stated Red Hats Christian Schaller on his personal blog.
It seems that the goal of the team is now to provide a tech preview ready for Fedora 20, which will have to be enough, at least for the time being. Its not going to be quite a working project, but at least it will give people an idea of what they should expect.
Its unclear if this particular timing has anything to do with Canonicals haste to provide a fully working Mir display server in their upcoming Ubuntu 13.10, which is scheduled for release in October.
“So the final switch to Wayland over X will only happen once we are as sure as we can be that our users will not be negatively affected by the change. So if we default to Wayland or X for Fedora 21 is still an open question,” also said Schaller in his blog post.
This “war” between display servers might have a clear winner, and that is the end user. Both teams, Intel and Canonical, now have better incentives to provide a better experience and no matter who wins, we will reap the fruits of their labor.

Ubuntu extends its Windows Azure availability with full Juju support
==========
Along with the powerful desktop, Canonical is seriously involved in the cloud, where it is creating innovative technologies populating numerous and diverse cloud structures.
[Juju][1] is an advanced Ubuntu technology that, paired with Juju charms and user-friendly Juju GUI, allows companies, teams of developers and users to deploy, manage, configure and maintain services in the cloud.
Canonical has [announced][2] that Juju fully supports now deploying services on [Windows Azure][3], extending the innovative cloud technology to more and more availabilities, therefore, meeting more and more needs spanning rich cloud demands, "today, Canonical, in cooperation with Microsoft, is announcing that Juju fully supports deploying services on Ubuntu into Windows Azure. This means that Ubuntu users can use Juju with its intuitive GUI to design and deploy sophisticated application infrastructure instantly into Windows Azure".
Its Azure availability permits now the handy deployment of more than **100 Juju charms** (usable services) into Windows Azure's Ubuntu instances.
![](http://iloveubuntu.net/pictures_me/juju%20windows%20azure.png)
As a consequence, there are now available Azure-ready certified [Ubuntu images][4] for all supported Ubuntu releases.
"Juju support for Windows Azure is a **major milestone**, as it underscores our commitment to delivering ease of use and portability of applications across the most popular cloud providers. Being able to design and deploy services using the same tool and process, irrespective of the deployment target, is invaluable. Being able to take a whole set of applications and reproduce the exact same setup on another cloud within minutes gives cloud users real choice".

==========
**GNOME 3.10 should be released this month, on September 25, and every Linux users who uses it expects the unexpected, so we thought it would be a very good idea to preview some of its upcoming features.**
First of all, we should mention the new apps. Yes, there are a bunch of new applications that will be introduced with the release of the GNOME 3.10 desktop environment, such as GNOME Maps, GNOME Music, GNOME Photos, GNOME Videos, and GNOME Notes.
Let's talk a little about each one of them, shall we? GNOME Maps is exactly what you think it is, a maps application, which will allow users to search locations, get directions, pin locations, as well as to find people and businesses.
On the other hand, GNOME Music is not what you think it is a replacement for Rhythmbox because it only provides a simple and elegant way for using Files (Nautilus) to display the contents of the Music directory. Oh, and Rhythmbox is still available (just reached version 3.0), and mature enough to be a good iTunes replacement.
The GNOME Notes app is similar to any other Memo or Notes application you see in today's smartphone devices, providing a nice and simple way to create, edit and view notes (text and images mostly). Some of you will be disappointed to find out that reminders and checklists functionality will not be part of this app.
GNOME Photos (thanks Debarshi Ray) will be the default application for viewing and managing your photos, with integration for Flickr and Facebook, and GNOME Videos will be the default app for searching and viewing local or remote video files.
Second of all, the looks of the GNOME 3 desktop have changed a little, as everyone (probably) expected. The new system status menu, which is [something we've already mentioned in a recent article][1], the focus-caret tracking (finally), a graphical user interface for the color tinting functionality, and app overview pagination, so you can easily navigate through your installed apps.
Another cool thing that will be part of the upcoming GNOME 3.10 desktop environment is the GNOME Software application, which is very similar to the Ubuntu Software Center app, but only as a preview.
![](http://i1-news.softpedia-static.com/images/extra/LINUX/large/gnome310-large_001.jpg)
A preview of the GNOME Software app - Image courtesy of [WolrdofGNOME][2]
Among other features, we can mention integration with the Zimbra enterprise-class email, calendar and collaboration solution, systemd will be used for the user session, Git integration, Hi-DPI display support, Wacom support, XSettings overrides, overall tweaks, and initial porting to the Wayland display server.

Wireless Aside, Cr OS Linux Delivers the Best of Two Worlds
===========================================================
**It is easy to be misled about exactly what Cr OS is. This open source OS project first debuted in 2009 as Chrome OS Linux. Last September its developers changed the name to Cr OS Linux. Even with a recent name change for this distro, it can be mistaken for other Linux OS projects that resemble Google's Chrome OS. Think Chromebook here.**
The [Cr OS Linux][1] distribution is an interesting blend of the Cinnamon desktop with a special edition of the Chromium Web browser.
The approach Cr OS Linux (pronounced "Cros Linux") takes gives you a taste of Linux Mint with a chaser of a not-quick pure Google Chrome OS.
Cr OS is a fully functional Linux distro. It has its own repository and package manager to provide software updates.
I was generally pleased with Cr OS. Its lightweight design does not have many of the advanced features that tend to bog down Linux Mint, but the Cinnamon desktop definitely provides a Minty look and feel.
![img](http://www.linuxinsider.com/images/article_images/78918_620x200.jpg "Cr OS Linux workspaces.")
Cr OS Linux uses GNOME scaling effects to depict workspaces.
The only serious impediment is its high rate of incompatibility with wireless hardware. If all you need is a solid Linux OS for your desktop computer, Cr OS could be an ideal choice. If you also want to use it on laptops, however, chances are it will not connect to your wireless card.
###WiFi Woes
I loaded the live DVD onto three different laptops I use regularly. Each one was built by a different but well-known laptop maker.
All connected to the Internet via cable just fine. None made the wireless connection. Cr OS failed to spot the wireless card.
This is a recurring problem with one of my laptops, but I can almost always get a wireless connection from at least one of the other two.
###No Chrome OS Clone
It is easy to be misled about exactly what Cr OS is. This open source OS project first debuted in 2009 as Chrome OS Linux. Last September its developers changed the name to Cr OS Linux.
Even with a recent name change for this distro, it can be mistaken for other Linux OS projects that resemble Google's Chrome OS. Think Chromebook here.
The developer's intent was to build a free Linux Live CD distribution around the revolutionary Google Chrome (Chromium) Web browser and based on the openSUSE operating system. That is what Cr OS Linux is.
Unlike the Chrome OS Project, however, Cr OS is more than just a browser-based OS.
###First Impressions
Cr OS is a Linux distro that gives you the best of two worlds. The combination of a traditional Linux desktop based on Cinnamon with a tweaked Chromium Web browser is awesome.
Cr OS installs with the InSync beta 10 client for Google Drive. This essentially turns the generic Chromium Web browser that is the basis of Google Chrome into the Chrome browser.
I can log into my Google account and have Chromium sync all of the Google apps so I get the appearance of actually running the Google Chrome browser. Even the Chrome store is connected to the Google Store in the browser.
So, if you use the Google Chrome browser and like the Cinnamon desktop, the Cr OS is very satisfying indeed.
###Software Galore
Cr OS has an impressive installed software base. This makes it much more flexible than Google Chrome OS, with all the limitations it imposes.
You can use your standard Linux apps and supplement the software with your favorite Google apps online via the Chromium browser linked to your Google account.
Cr OS does not install the latest versions of every application, but at least I did not have to add the key programs I expect to find in a Linux distro. Among the apps provided are the Banshee 2.4 media player, Shotwell 0.12 photo manager, GIMP 2.8 image editor, LibreOffice 3.5 office suite, Wine 1.5 Windows emulator, Cheese 3.4 webcam app and the Pidgin 2.10 instant messenger.
###Under the Hood
Cr OS is no slouch in the engine department, either. It has a Dashboard with social toolbar and a very functional Control Center.
Powering this distro release is Linux kernel 3.6.5 and the Cinnamon 1.6.6 desktop environment. The Chromium 24.0.1290 Web browser is the stock offering.
###Getting It
The download process for Cr OS is horrible. You can choose to pay for a Gold membership account for really fast download speed, or you can choose the regular download option for free, go through a 60-second wait with gotcha verification and then a very slow (353 minutes) download.
The download service is provided by depositfiles.com. The Cr OS website has almost no information about the community or company providing the software. The site gives you the option to go to its Google+ page, but until you agree to add them to your Circles, you get no information from there either.
You can also choose to download the live DVD version or the install-to-USB-drive portable version. The live download is 826 MB. The USB download is a 976 MB tar.gz file (3.9 GB unpacked).
###A Better Source
An alternative is [here][2] at the [SuSE][3] Studio affiliate website. You still need to set up an account, however, unless you have Google or other affiliated log-ins.
The download speeds are not throttled back here, however, so the complete download is much quicker. The download speed still depends on your service provider and other factors, but no USB installation download was available.
Either way, you may still sense some branding confusion. Cr OS Linux is not affiliated with Google Chrome, other than the tie-in with the Insync integration.
The splash screen sports the Google red, green and yellow colored circle. The two-tone blue Chromium icon sits on the desktop panel, however.
###Bottom Line
If the wireless connectivity issue does not affect you, Cr OS is a solid Linux distro. It offers an uncluttered Cinnamon desktop environment with a tweaked-out version of the Chromium Web browser.
Cr OS is not as mainstream as other Linux distros, but its unique approach may be just what you need to enjoy a more pure Linux experience.
