About a week ago my friend asked me to help him with some information about some good cd/dvd apps in Ubuntu, because he was planning to give a try to Linux. This guy is a windows user, but the software he uses in Windows costs so much he can not afford anymore. So, why not use free software to burn your favourite movies and music files? There are also free alternatives in windows operating system, but since my friend is moving to Linux world, lets give him information about three free cd and dvd burning tools for Ubuntu Linux.
**Brasero Disc Burner**

Every ubuntu user is familiar with the Brasero Disc Burner tool for the reason that it comes as a default application in Ubuntu Linux. Brasero is a free disc-burning program licensed under the terms of the GNU General Public License. The good thing about this software is that it supports both CD and DVD formats. Brasero supports single-session data DVDs and any type of CD and can use all audio files handled by Gstreamer local installation (ogg, flac, mp3, …).
## Features ##
**Data CD/DVD:**
- supports edition of discs contents (remove/move/rename files inside directories)
- can burn data CD/DVD on the fly
- automatic filtering for unwanted files (hidden files, broken/recursive symlinks, files not conforming to joliet standard, …)
- supports multisession
- supports joliet extension
- can write the image to the hard drive
- can check disc file integrity
**Audio CD:**
- write CD-TEXT information (automatically found thanks to gstreamer)
- supports the edition of CD-TEXT information
- can burn audio CD on the fly
- can use all audio files handled by Gstreamer local installation (ogg, flac, mp3, …)
- can search for audio files inside dropped folders
- full edition of silences between tracks

**K3b**

K3b is another free tool which can be used to perform most CD/DVD burning tasks. This feature rich application has a very easy to use interface and can deal with deal with Blu-Rays or HD DVDs.
It consists of basicly three parts:
The projects:
Projects are created from the file menu and then filled with data to burn.
The Tools:
The tools menu offers different tools like CD copy or DVD formatting.
Context sensitive media actions:
When clicking on the Icon representing a CD/DVD drive K3b will present it’s contents and allow some further action. This is for example the way to rip audio CDs.
K3b can automatically rename MP3 and OGG files to fit a common format like “artist – title.mp3, burn data CDs by dragging files or burning an ISO image, create eMovix CDs and DVDs and rip audio discs into nearly any format with CDDB support, but this is not all this amazing tool can do. You can read more about its features [here][2].
**Xfburn**

Xfburn is another tool to help burning CDs and DVDs which fits very well in the Xfce Desktop Environment. It can burn Video CDs and DVDs, is very fast, lightweight and the best solution if you dont want to intall the KDE dependencies needed for K3b.
**Note**: Xfburn is currently in development so some features may be missing, but it is a very good tool to burn data.

Alongside an [update to photo utility Shotwell][1] comes a new version of Geary – the popular open-source desktop e-mail app.
It’s the first release by Yorba, the team behind the client, since it [failed to make its $100,000 crowdfunding goal][2] back in April.
The lightweight app, a firm favourite of mine for a long time, gains a number of new features in today’s update, many of which have long been requested.
Geary now has **per-account searching, auto-saving of draft e-mails and a built-in security tool** that checks outgoing links for malicious content.
The look of the app, which has always put focus on mail first and chrome second, has also been updated.
The sidebar, which now displays an **unread count per folder**, uses a new set of monochrome icons for accounts and folders; the toolbar has been refreshed with new ‘menu buttons’.

**Install Geary 0.4 In Ubuntu**
If you’re using **Ubuntu 12.10 or 13.04** then you can [grab this release from the Yorba PPA][3].
Open up a new *Terminal window* and enter the following commands:

First impressions of Semplice Linux 5

[Semplice][1] Linux is a distribution based on the Debian GNU/Linux project. Specifically, Semplice is built using software from Debian's Unstable branch. The Semplice developers use the software packages in the Unstable repository and combine them with a custom graphical installer. The [project's website][2] also mentions that the distribution comes with support for encrypted LVM volumes and that Semplice is focused on being fast, light on resources, "rock solid" and elegant. This is accomplished by combining the Unstable Debian base with the Openbox window manager. The distribution is available in both 32-bit and 64-bit builds and the ISO provided on the website weighs in at approximately 620 MB.
Booting from the distribution's live media brings up a graphical interface with a single window. This window contains three tabs which invite us to select our keyboard's layout, our preferred language and our time zone. Once we confirm these settings are correct the window disappears and we are shown an Openbox interface. The background is bright blue. At the bottom of the display we find a task switcher and system tray. Right-clicking on the background brings up the distribution's application menu. One of the top-level items in the menu is an entry for the distribution's system installer.

Semplice's system installer is a graphical application. The program presents a friendly interface and walks us through the usual steps. We are asked to confirm our preferred language, our keyboard's layout and the local time zone. We are asked if we would like to check for updates to the system installer in the distribution's repositories. I did perform this check and the installer did find an updated version of itself on-line. I downloaded this update and the installer restarted itself to perform the upgrade. We are asked to create a user account for ourselves and, optionally, we can enable the root account. By default Semplice sets up the first user account with sudo administrative access and disables the root account. However, we have the option of enabling the root account and setting a password to protect it. When we get to the disk partitioning screens we have the option of a guided path where the installer will try to divide our hard disk for us. Alternatively we can manually partition the local disk.
I found manual partitioning was a little awkward, mostly due to the screen's layout. I also found that when I tried to create LVM volumes the installer wouldn't allow it. There is a dialogue which asks us to name our new volume and that screen's "OK" button was disabled, preventing me from proceeding. There are traditional file system options available too, including ext2/3/4 and ReiserFS. Once the disk has been partitioned we are asked if we would like to install the GRUB boot loader. With this done the final step we are presented with is enabling/disabling certain features and services. Semplice's installer allows us to decide at install time whether we need Bluetooth support, printing software, productivity software, visual desktop effects, web apps and proprietary packages. Once we check off which items we do (or do not) want the installer copies its files to the local disk. This only takes a few minutes and, when the process has completed, we are prompted to reboot the computer.
The Semplice Linux distribution comes with a good deal of useful software. Right out of the box we are given the Chromium web browser, the Claws Mail e-mail client, the XChat IRC software and the Pidgin instant messaging software. The gFTP file transfer client is installed for us along with the uGet download manager, a document viewer and the GNU Paint drawing program. The AbiWord word processor and the Gnumeric spreadsheet applications are available in the menu too. I found MPlayer on the system as well as the xfburn disc burner and the Exaile audio player. There was a copy of Tetris in the Games sub-menu and I found a text editor, calculator, image viewer, file manager and archive manager present.
There were a handful of configuration utilities in the application menu allowing us to easily work with network settings, system services and user accounts. There were also apps for managing the appearance of the Openbox window manager. Among the applications were web app entries which opened a minimal web browser to the Twitter and Facebook websites. There is also a link to the Semplice project website. Digging deeper I found Semplice comes with a full range of multimedia codecs and Adobe's Flash plugin. With the default installation the system runs a secure shell service. I also found the GNU Compiler Collection was available. In the background the Linux kernel, version 3.10, kept things running.

I ran into a few minor issues while I was working with Semplice. For example, when running the "top" process monitor in a virtual terminal the system statistics were missing from the top of the screen. With a little exploring I found the virtual terminal's colours were set up in a way which made the text invisible. Changing to a different colour scheme worked for a short time, but the next time I opened a terminal the colours had reverted back to their defaults. My settings were always lost when the terminal was closed. Another instance where settings were not respected showed up post-install. While I was setting up Semplice the installer asked which services I wanted to enable. These included Bluetooth, printing support, web apps and a few other items.
I told the installer to skip Bluetooth support and not to install printing software. However, once Semplice had been installed I went into the services manager application and found both Bluetooth and printing services were installed and enabled. A third curious problem came up when I tried to connect to the distribution's secure shell service. Any attempt to connect via secure shell resulted in the connection being reset and dropped. I soon found this problem came from the distribution not generating host keys for OpenSSH to use. Once these keys were manually generated I was able to make use of the secure shell server.
Software packages are handled by the Synaptic graphical package manager. Synaptic fills in as the distribution's software updating application and general purpose package manager. The venerable application may not have the eye candy offered by more modern package managers, but Synaptic is quite capable. It allows us to create batches of actions to perform and the program works quickly, offering us detailed information while it is working. The distribution pulls packages from a few different software repositories. Semplice, by default, pulls software from Debian's Unstable repositories as well as some custom Semplice repositories. When I first installed the distribution there were 137 updates waiting for me, weighing in at approximately 135MB in size. By the end of the week I had installed over 200 updates totaling around 200MB in size. Semplice, being based on Debian's Unstable branch, is effectively a rolling release distribution and will typically receive a rapid stream of cutting-edge packages.

I tried running Semplice Linux on my desktop machine (dual-core 2.8 GHz CPU, 6 GB of RAM, Radeon video card, Realtek network card) and in a virtual machine powered by VirtualBox. Despite several attempts using different kernel parameters I was unable to get Semplice to boot on my physical computer. On the other hand, Semplice ran well in the virtual environment. While running in VirtualBox I found the distribution booted quickly, was responsive and was (for the duration of my trial) stable. The distribution was fairly light on memory, using approximately 130 MB of RAM.
My time with Semplice was, in a word, okay. I realize that's not a ringing endorsement, nor is it meant to be dismissive. Semplice, overall, performed well, it comes with a lot of good software and I think its system installer is nicer than Debian's, at least for desktop systems. The administrative tools Semplice comes with are helpful and, with access to Debian's repositories, the distribution gives us a huge pool of software packages from which to draw. The project stays fairly close to the cutting edge and users will need to be mindful of that if they wish to avoid downtime following package upgrades, but at the same time it gives us a chance to experiment. On the flip side, there were a few problems I ran into. The installer didn't appear to respect my choice of system services and I wasn't able to make use of encrypted LVM volumes.
There were other little problems like the virtual terminal not remembering my settings. Plus, I couldn't help shake the feeling that Semplice, with its fairly user-friendly style, might have been better off using LXDE instead of plain Openbox for the graphical interface. Not that I have anything against Openbox, but LXDE provides a nice, familiar interface for new users and would probably make more people feel at home while carrying approximately the same resource footprint. Another issue was Semplice didn't run on my physical hardware. I try not to hold this against distributions as what works for me may not work for others and, for that matter, what works for other people doesn't always run for me. Still, other Debian-derived projects, such as Ubuntu and Linux Mint Debian Edition, typically run smoothly on this hardware so I was surprised to find Semplice did not. One final issue was the way the OpenSSH service was running, but no host key was provided, causing secure shell connections to drop. It was a minor thing to create new host keys, but it would have been nice to have secure shell working right from the start.
In short, my first impression of Semplice is the distribution looks nice, makes a few improvements over plain Debian (at least for desktop/laptop users) and comes with a good selection of default software. However, it does have some rough edges. Perhaps nothing serious, nothing that would scare away an intermediate Linux user, but there were a few problems which I hope will get smoothed out in future releases.

GParted 0.16.2 Review

**GParted is probably one of the most important applications on the Linux platform and it's also one of the most useful and recognizable pieces of software.**
It would be incorrect to talk about GParted as a standalone application. To be fair, this is the GTK+ frontend to GNU Parted, but the developers have done a lot more than just provide a simple interface for an otherwise cumbersome and difficult software.
GParted was launched back in 2004 and the developers have been working on it ever since. The process is slow and the latest version released (and reviewed by us) is 0.16.2. Keep in mind that almost 10 years of active development have passed.
Users will find that GParted is not the only tool in the shed. A live operating system is also available, by the name of GParted Live. This is capable of running on virtually anything that comes with an optical drive or USB port, including Mac systems.
It would be hard to imagine the Linux world without this tool, but we also have to say that it's not the only application able to do this work.
**Installation**
This is a tricky one. The GParted developers only provide the latest version of their application as source, which means that if you really want the best version, you will have to do some compiling. This is the bad news.
We installed GParted on Ubuntu 13.10 (Saucy Salamander) and everything worked without a hitch. The last version in the official repositories is 0.16.1 and this should be enough for most users. The differences between this one and the latest 0.16.2 are not quite major and only cover a particular set of changes.
Let's assume that you really want the latest version. Download the archive and extract its contents. This is not a big piece of software and the compilation won't take too long. Usually, users just have to enter the following commands:
./configure
make
sudo make install
The problem is that normal people, like you and me, don't usually have all the necessary dependencies installed. This means that you will have to go install them, one by one, when the ./configure command errors out.
The good news is that, Ubuntu users have a very handy command that works for all the applications in their repositories. Before giving the ./configure command, enter the following first:
sudo apt-get build-dep gparted
This will get all the necessary dependencies from the repositories and will free users from the task of installing one library after another.
**Usage**
As I said before, this is a partition editor. This means that you will be able to move, resize, repartition, and do virtually anything you can think of, within the comforts of a GUI.
Users can also delete partitions and fix USB drives that have been corrupted by other operating systems. You must be careful though. If you have a multiboot system, like I do, you will find it very easy to damage the Windows installation.
GParted is able to manipulate the following file system formats: btrfs, crypt / LUKS, ext2, ext3, ext4, fat16, fat32, hfs, hfs+, linux-swap, lvm2 pv, nilfs2, ntfs, reiserfs, reiser4, ufs, and xfs. GParted can also be used to clone entire partitions.
Moreover, the application has also received UEFI secure boot support and can run without any problems on PCs featuring this particular nuisance.

**The Good**
Users of other operating systems, such as Windows or Mac OS, are paying top dollars for this type of applications. The Linux users get it for free and the developers are always looking to expand and improve it.
The interface is clean and simple to understand, even for someone who has just installed Linux for the first time.
**The Bad**
It's so easy to be bad with this application. It has the potential to do a lot of harm, especially because it needs the root password to run.
It would be nice if more comprehensive advice were provided, or if a beginner version could be activated at start. More and more users are flocking towards the Linux platform and some of them might want to use GParted.
**Conclusion**
Who knew that partitioning could be fun? GParted turns a dreary and potentially dangerous activity into something that is not scary and that provides very good feedback for users, unlike a command line application.
Long gone are the days when users had to move partitions inside terminals. GParted acts and looks like a professional solution, and it's a tool that we can't really do without.

**This is a small and simple tutorial that will help you install all the Icons from the new iOS 7 operating system from Apple into your Ubuntu 12.04, 13.04, and 13.10.**

The installation of icons might not seem like much, but it’s actually a very important part of the ecosystem. You wouldn't recognize Ubuntu so easily if Canonical didn’t use the same type of icons in every release, with only small differences.
It used to be difficult to install themes, icons, and mouse cursors, but things got a lot easier over the years. To get a new set of icons installed, you only need to run a few commands from a terminal.
Before we begin, you need to heed a small word of caution. The PPA presented in this article will only work for Ubuntu 12.04. This is because this icon set, the only one which correctly replicates the models from iOS 7, is made for elementary OS, which in turn is based on Ubuntu 12.04.
This being said, the icons can also be installed for Ubuntu 13.04 and Ubuntu 13.10, with a slightly different approach.
You will also need another piece of software that must be used to enable the icons. We recommend GNOME Tweak Tool, but there are a few others available if you really wish it.
To install GNOME Tweak Tool just run the following command in a terminal:
sudo apt-get install gnome-tweak-tool
You will find the application in Ubuntu under the name of Tweak Tool.
In order to get the PPA and icon in your Ubuntu 12.04 operating system, you only need to run a few commands in a terminal near you:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:elementary-br/projects
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install ieos7-icons
For Ubuntu 13.04 and Ubuntu 13.10, you will have to manually download the files and also install it from a terminal:
wget -c https://launchpad.net/~elementary-br/+archive/projects/+files/ieos7-icons_0.1-0~13~ubuntu12.04.1_all.deb
sudo dpkg -i ieos7-icons_0.1-0~13~ubuntu12.04.1_all.deb
If by any chance you will find that the deb installation stops for whatever reason, just run `sudo apt-get install -f` find any dependency issues and finish the job.
This pack only holds about 300 icons, so you might find that a few of the applications on your operating systems still retain the old look.

Install Jitsi Instant Messenger in Ubuntu

[Jitsi][1] is an open source and multi platform audio/video Internet phone and instant messenger written in Java. It supports some of the most popular instant messaging and telephony protocols such as SIP, Jabber/XMPP (and hence Facebook and Google Talk), AIM, ICQ, MSN, Yahoo! Messenger.
Jitsi is also considered a good alternative to Skype.

**Installing Jitsi**
Press Ctrl+Alt+T on your keyboard to open terminal. When it opens, run below command to download it:
**32 Bit:**
$ wget https://download.jitsi.org/jitsi/debian/jitsi_2.2-latest_i386.deb
**64 Bit:**
$ wget https://download.jitsi.org/jitsi/debian/jitsi_2.2-latest_amd64.deb
Run the command below for both 32 and 64 bit systems:
$ sudo dpkg -i jitsi_2.2-latest_*.deb
The above command installs Jitsi 2.2 on your system and add its repository to your system, making it easy for updates.

Semplice 5 review – High Hopes

Sometimes I come across a distribution that looks interesting and I want to see how good it is and whether it brings anything new to the table. That’s why I decided to take a quick look at Semplice, a desktop distribution based on the unstable branch of Debian.
Its name is said to derive from “simple” and that the developers subscribe to the “KISS principle.”
The first time I reviewed a distribution designed around that principle, I was not too impressed, because it usually means shipping a bare-bones system that requires users to tweak almost every aspect to make it just work.
So in this very short and light review, I’ll take you through a test installation of Semplice 5, the latest edition, to see if it’s a distribution I can recommend to my target audience – new and inexperienced users. It was released on September 8 (2013).
Let’s start with the installation program.
**The Installer** is of the graphical type, with an easy-to-navigate interface. It’s not exactly like that of Ubuntu, but close. There is support for automated and manual disk partitioning. This screen shot shows both options at the Disk Partitioning step.

Opting for automated disk partitioning will cause the installer to create two partitions, one for Swap and the other for the main partition.

Unfortunately, the automated partition option is more like semi-automated, because to move beyond the step of the installation process shown in this screen shot, you are first required to set the mount points manually. Setting the mount point is a very simple task, but that’s enough to put an asterisk on the “automated” disk partitioning option.

After all the preliminary steps have been completed, you just sit back and watch the installer get to work. Although this is an easy to use installer, it does not have the “advanced” features that has now become a standard part of Ubuntu’s installer.

This is another screen shot from the installer. At this step, you are presented with options to enable a range of features. This features manager is also accessible after installation, so you can always change any setting you make here.

And for each feature, you have the option to customize it.

After the installation has completed, and you reboot the system, you should see this login screen. Beautiful graphics, by the way.

eyond that login screen is a desktop which uses the Openbox window manager, a minimalist window manager that’s not really for new or inexperienced users looking for a hassle-free system for desktop computing.

By default, you access the menu by right-clicking anywhere on the desktop or bottom panel. There are four desktops or virtual workspaces to work from.

But in keeping with the KISS principle, the standard directories in your home folder are absent. You are required to create them yourself.

In terms of installed applications, the standard ones that most people will need for desktop computing are installed. Chromium is the default Web browser.

No Office suite is installed, so be prepared to install one yourself. For the record, LibreOffice 4.1.1 is in the repository.

And for installing new applications or managing those already installed, the available graphical application manager is Synaptic Package Manager. It does not have the fancy interface of Linux Deepin‘s Deepin Software Center, but it gets the job done.

There are a couple of Web apps in the menu (Facebook and Twitter) and the distribution provides a tool for adding others. Just start the application from the command line by typing the command (oneslip-add-app gtk) shown in this screen shot.

Aside from Synaptic Package Manager and the Web app tool, there are other graphical management applications installed. One, is the Services Settings manager, with which you can manage the system daemons.

Another is the Task Manager. These are all standard graphical management applications available on most distributions, but it’s good to see that they are available on a distribution designed around the KISS principle.

This screen shot shows the interface connection manager, which has an option for specifying a firewall zone for an interface. The problem is that FirewallD, the firewall application that provides the feature, is not installed, even though it is available in the repository. Perhaps this is in keeping with the KISS principle. But without a basic security application in place, a default installation of this distribution present a very bad security posture.

**Chakra** is the first distribution I reviewed designed around the KISS principle, but with time, the developers have softened their stance and made some features available by default. One thing I’ve learned is that distributions like this are not really designed for new or inexperienced users, but for those looking for a resource-friendly, no-frills operating system. If that’s the type of distribution you are looking for, I think you’ll like Semplice 5. Otherwise, stick with the likes of Linux Mint, Ubuntu (if you can stand the Unity desktop), Mageia and others like them.

Ubuntu ships by default [Shotwell][1], handy image manager and basic editor permitting both image-gallery management and basic image editing, latter proving itself useful in numerous and numerous situations.
Shotwell has been [updated][2] to version 0.15, introducing new features and a significant amount of fixes and optimizations.
`Right-clicking on an image-->Open With-->Shotwell Photo Viewer`, pushes the image into Shotwell, where the user is able to edit the image with several options, among which Adjust.
Hitting the `Adjust` button, the user is to notice the newly-implemented Highlights entry, entry useful to on-demand tweak the level of `highlight`; for example, setting `Highlights` as low as possible, removes the light from the editing-in-progress image.

Clicking on the bottom-bar's `Crop` button, summons a resizable dialog, permitting to the user to crop the image accordingly, dialog gaining in the 0.15 version **size-aware** capabilities.
Resizing the dialog, exposes in real-time the newly-acquired size, allowing the user to hassle-free observe the size of the about-to-be-cropped portion of the image; for example, in order to crop a piece of an image to 640x480, the user is now to adjust the cropping dialog to 640x480, handy ability adding clarity to the image editor.

Moreover, Shotwell 0.15 comes with:

Even if you do not own a nexus device, you can still help and contribute by creating automated tests for fixed bugs so they don’t occur again. Sharing is caring! It is the only way to make the world a better place.
Nicholas Skaggs also writes that qa team is committing to test each of the stable images released and do exploratory testing against new features and specific packagesets. You can read more about his post here.
Ubuntu has introduced its own display server, Mir, which replaces the venerable and slow X Window. Canonical is also extending Ubuntu dash search as well, offering its users perform local search in Facebook, Yelp, Google Drive and dozens of other services as well.

During the latest weeks, [Weather App][2] has seen numerous optimizations and refinements, polish effort aimed at delivering a stable version of the weather application in the near future.
Weather App comes with support for multiple cities and a rich range of weather values, values (like for example, Celsius degrees) expressed in relation to predefined colors; for example, the value 20 degrees Celsius is rendered with an orange-to-red color, while lower temperatures are expressed with green-to-gray color tones.
Weather App has been updated to a minor-yet-interesting release, bringing, along with bug fixes, more dark colors for the vividly-rendered color tones on its views.
Meaning, high temperatures (such as 20 degrees Celsius) retain the same orange-to-red color, yet, their color vitality has been decreased by eliminating percentages of light, while adding subtle-yet-noticeable dark tones.
The result: the weather's colors are now more pleasant to the eye featuring more calm colors.
