[Min][1] is a Web browser with a minimal design that provides speedy operation with simple features.
When it comes to software design, "minimal" does not mean low functionality or undeveloped potential. If you like minimal distraction tools for your text editor and note-taking applications, that same comfort appeal is evident in the Min browser.
I mostly use Google Chrome, Chromium and Firefox on my desktops and laptop computers. I am well invested in their add-on functionality, so I can access all the specialty services that get me through my long sessions in researching and working online.
However, I sometimes prefer a fast, uncluttered alternative on-ramp to the Internet. With multiple projects in progress, I can amass a wide collection of open tabs or even separate windows of the powerhouse browsers in no time.
I have tried other browser options with little success. The alternatives usually have their own sets of distracting add-ons and features that tend to pull me into more off-task behavior.
The Min browser does not do that. It is a GitHub-sourced Web browser that is easy to use, and it keeps the typical interruptions from distracting me.

The Min browser is minimal-design Web browser that provides speedy operation with simple features. Just don't expect to take its tour any time soon.
### What It Does
The Min browser comes in versions for Debian Linux variants, Windows and Mac machines. It can not compete with the functionality available in the mainstream cross-platform Web browsers.
It does not have to compete, though. Its claim to fame very well might be supplementing rather than replacing them.
One big reason for this is its built-in ad blocking capability. Out of the box, the Min browser needs no configuration or hunting for compatible third-party apps to do end-runs around ads.
In Edit/Preferences, you have three options to click/unclick for content blocking. It's easy to modify blocking tactics to suit your preferences. The Block Trackers and Ads option uses EasyList and EasyPrivacy. If nothing else, keep this option checked.
You also can block scripts and block images. Doing both maximizes the website loading speeds and really ramps up your protection against rogue code attacks.
### Have Search Your Way
If you spend considerable time doing online research, you will adore the way Min handles searching. It is a top-notch feature.
Search functionality is accessible right in the browser's URL bar. Min utilizes search engine DuckDuckGo and Wikipedia entries. You can enter search queries directly into the Web address field.
This approach saves time since you do not have to go to the search engine window first. A nice bonus is the ability to search your bookmarks.
In the Edit/Preferences menu, choose your choice for default search engine. The list includes DuckDuckGo, Google, Bing, Yahoo, Baidu, Wikipedia and Yandex.
Try making DuckDuckGo your default search engine. Min is built around that option but does not impose it on you.

Min browser's search functionality is part of the URL bar. Min utilizes search engine DuckDuckGo and Wikipedia entries. You can enter search queries directly into the Web address window.
The search bar displays answers to your questions very rapidly. It uses information from DuckDuckGo including Wikipedia entries, a calculator and more.
It offers quick snippets, answers and Web suggestions. It sort of substitutes for not being in a Google-based environment.
### Navigating Aids
Min lets you jump to any site quickly with fuzzy search. It throws suggestions at you almost immediately.
I like the way the tabs open next to the current tab. You do not have to set this preference. It is there by default with no other choice, but it makes sense.

Tabs you have not clicked on for a while dim. This lets you concentrate on your current task without distractions.
Min does not need an add-on tool to keep numerous tabs under control. The browser displays a list of tags and lets you split them into groups.
### Stay Focused
Min has an optional Focus Mode hidden in the View menu. When enabled, it hides all tabs except the one you have opened. You must return to the menu to turn off Focus Mode before you can open new tabs.
The Tasks feature also helps you stay focused. You can create tasks from the File menu or with Control+Shift+N. If you want to open a new tab, you can select that option in the Files menu or use Control+T.
Call the new task whatever fits your style. I like being able to organize and display as a group all the tabs associated with a work project or a specific portion of my research. I can recall the entire list at any time to easily and quickly find where I was in my browsing adventure.
Another neat feature is found under the paragraph alignment icon in the tab area. Click it to enable Reading Mode. This mode saves the article for future reference and strips away everything on the page so you can focus on the task of reading.
### Not Perfect
The Min browser is not a perfect alternative to high-powered, feature-bloated alternatives. It does have a few glaring weaknesses that developers have taken too long to rectify.
For instance, It lacks a solid developer website stocked with support forums and detailed user guides. That may be partly due to its home being GitHub rather than an independent developer website. Still, it's a weakness that is glaring to new users.
Without website support, users are forced to struggle with lists of readme files and hard-to-follow directories on GitHub. You can access them from the Min browser Help menu -- but that's not much help.
A case in point is the Welcome to Min splash screen that loads from the menu when you launch the browser. It displays two buttons. One says "Start Browsing." The other says "Take a Tour." Neither one works.
However, you can start browsing by clicking on the menu bar at the top of the Min window. There is no workaround for the missing tour, though.
### Bottom Line
Min is not a full-featured Web browser with bells and whistles galore. It is not designed for add-ons and many other features you typically use in well-established Web browsers. However, Min serves an important niche purpose by offering speed and distraction-free browsing.
The more I use the Min browser, the more productive it is for me -- but be wary when you first start to use it.
Min is not complicated or confusing -- it is just quirky. You have to play around with it to discover how it works.

Its Time to Ditch Skype and TeamSpeak, Discord Launches Its App for Linux Users

### The app is now available for Ubuntu Linux and other distros
In a very brief announcement posted on Twitter earlier today, January 11, 2016, [Discord][1], the company behind the popular, free, and secure all-in-one voice and text chat for gamers, announced the first stable release of their app for Linux platforms.
Linux was the missing piece for them to achieve full status and offer their services across all major platforms, both on desktop and mobile. Discord is currently available for Android, iOS, Mac, and Windows, but you can also use it directly from the Web, using a compatible web browser.
The app appears to be a direct competitor to Microsoft's Skype VoIP client, as well as the well-known TeamSpeak voice communication platform. It offers a wide range of features, including IP and DDoS protection, in-game overlay, smart push notifications, individual volume control, support for multiple channels, and a modern text chat.
Other noteworthy features of Discord include support for codecs, permissions, and custom keyboard shortcuts, a direct messaging system and friends list. It also promises to keep the CPU usage as minimal as possible, offering low latency support for audio and automatic failover functionality.
### Install Discord on Ubuntu now
The first stable release of the official Discord app for Linux systems, versioned 0.0.1, is currently [available for download][2] as a binary package for Debian and Ubuntu-based distributions, such as Ubuntu, Debian, Linux Mint, etc. However, to install it, you'll need to have a 64-bit installation.
There's also a source tarball available for download in case you're not running an operating system based on Debian or Ubuntu, but you'll have to compile it. It appears that Discord 0.0.1 already made its way into the Arch Linux AUR repositories, and it's coming soon to Solus, too. Other distros may add Discord to their repositories in the coming weeks.

This latest version helps organizations better embrace new Linux container technologies that can deliver innovative business applications and services without sacrificing existing IT investments.
Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform 3.4 provides a platform for innovation without giving up existing mission-critical workloads. It offers dynamic storage provisioning for both traditional and cloud-native applications, as well as multitenant capabilities that can support multiple applications, teams and deployment processes in a hybrid cloud environment.
Today's enterprises are must balance management of their existing application portfolios with the goal of making it easier for developers to build new applications, observed Brian Gracely, director of product strategy for OpenShift at Red Hat.
The new release focuses on three complex areas for enterprises: managing storage; isolating resources for multiple groups (multitenancy); and the ability to consistently run applications on multiple cloud environments (public or private).
"Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform 3.4 builds on the momentum of both the Kubernetes and Docker projects, which are helping developers use containers to modernize existing applications and build new cloud-native microservices," Gracely told LinuxInsider.
OpenShift Container Platform 3.4 makes storage provisioning easier for developers and operators, and it enhances how the platform can be used to provide multitenant resources to multiple groups within an organization. Additionally, it continues to codify the best practices needed to deploy a consistent container platform across any cloud environment, such as AWS, Azure, GCP, OpenStack or VMware.
### Pushes Cloud Benefits
The new platform advances the process of creating and deploying applications by addressing the growing storage needs of applications across the hybrid cloud for enterprises. It allows for coexistence of modern and future-forward workloads on a single, enterprise-ready platform.
The new OpenShift Container Platform and service gives Red Hat customers an easy way to adopt and use Google Cloud as a public of hybrid cloud environment, noted Charles King, principal analyst at [Pund-IT][1].
"It will be a welcome addition in many or most enterprise IT shops, especially those that are active employing or exploring container solutions," he told LinuxInsider.
"Since Red Hat will act as the service provider of the new offering, customers should also be able to seamlessly integrate OpenShift support with their other Red Hat products and services," King pointed out.
The new release also provides an enterprise-ready version of Kubernetes 1.4 and the Docker container runtime, which will help customers roll out new services more quickly with the backing of Red Hat Enterprise Linux.
OpenShift Container Platform 3.4 integrates architectures, processes and services to enable delivery of critical business applications, whether legacy or cloud-native, and containerized workloads.
### Open Source and Linux Innovation
Kubernetes is becoming the de facto standard for orchestrating and managing Linux containers. OpenShift is delivering the leading enterprise-ready platform built on Kubernetes, noted Red Hat's Gracely.
"Kubernetes is one of the fastest-growing open source projects, with contributors from cloud providers, independent software vendors and [individual and business] end-users," he said. "It has become a project that has done an excellent job of considering and addressing the needs of many different groups with many types of application needs."
Both Red Hat and Google are pushing for innovation. Both companies are among the market's most proactive and innovative supporters of open source and Linux solutions.
"The pair's collaboration on this new service is a no-brainer that could eventually lead to Red Hat and Google finding or creating further innovative open source offerings," said Pund-IT's King.
### Features and Benefits
Among the new capabilities in the latest version of OpenShift Container Platform:
* Next-level container storage with support for dynamic storage provisioning -- This allows multiple storage types and multitier storage exposure in Kubernetes;
* Container-native storage enabled by Red Hat Gluster Storage -- This now supports dynamic provisioning and push button deployment for stateful and stateless applications;
* Software-defined, highly available and scalable storage solution -- This provides access across on-premises and public cloud environments for more cost efficiency over traditional hardware-based or cloud-only storage services;
* Enhanced multitenancy through more simplified management of projects -- This feature is powered by Kubernetes namespaces in a single Kubernetes cluster. Applications can run fully isolated and share resources on a single Kubernetes cluster in OpenShift Container Platform.
### More Supplements
The OpenShift Container Platform upgrade adds the capacity to search for projects and project details, manage project membership, and more via a more streamlined Web console. This capability facilitates working with multiple projects across dispersed teams.
Another enhancement is the multitenancy feature that provides application development teams with their own cloud-like application environment. It lets them build and deploy customer-facing or internal applications using DevOps processes that are isolated from one another.
Also available in the new release are new hybrid cloud reference architectures for running Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform on OpenStack, VMware, Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud Engine and Microsoft Azure. These guides help walk a user through deployment across public and private clouds, virtual machines and bare metal.
"It also drastically simplifies how developers can access storage resources, allowing developers to dynamically provision storage resources/capacity with the click of a button -- effectively self-service for developers. It also allows developers to feel confident that the resources required for their applications will be properly isolated from other resource needs in the platform," said Red Hat's Gracely.
### Orchestration Backbone
The foundation for Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform 3.4 is the open source Kubernetes Project community. Kubernetes 1.4 features alpha support for expanded cluster federation APIs.
It enables multiple clusters federated across a hybrid environment. Red Hat engineers view this feature as a key component to enabling hybrid cloud deployments in the enterprise.
The latest version of OpenShift is available now via the Red Hat Customer Portal. It offers community innovation as hardened, production-grade features.
### Ensuring Customer Health
Red Hat's platform is vital to the success of The Vitality Group's global initiative and reward program, according to CIO Neil Adamson.
This program is a key component of how the company envisions the future of health, he said.
"Advanced services for our customers can only be delivered by embracing next-generation technologies, particularly those provided through the open source communities that drive Linux containers, Kubernetes and IoT," said Adamson.
Red Hat's OpenShift Container Platform provides his company with the best of these communities while still delivering a stable, more secure foundation that help "reap the benefits of open source innovation while lessening the risks often inherent to emerging technologies."
The latest platform features will further support application development in the cloud. Container solutions are being adopted rapidly for many core IT tasks, including app development projects and processes, according to King, who noted that "being able to seamlessly deploy containers in a widely and easily accessible environment like Google Cloud should simplify development tasks."

A beginner's guide to comparing files using visual diff/merge tool Meld on Linux

Now that we've [covered][5] [some][6] command line-based diff/merge tools in Linux, it'd be logical to explain some visual diff/merge tools available for the OS as well. Reason being, not everybody is used-to the command line, and/or command-line based comparison tools could be more difficult to learn and understand for some.
So, we'll kick off this new series with a GUI-based tool dubbed **Meld**.
But before we jump onto the installation and explanation part, it'd be worth sharing that all the instructions and examples presented in this tutorial have been tested on Ubuntu 14.04 and the Meld version we've used is 3.14.2.
### About Meld
[Meld][7] is basically a visual comparison and merging tool that's primarily aimed at developers (however, rest assured that we'll be explaining the tool keeping in mind end-users). The tool supports both two- and three-way comparisons, and not only lets you compare files, but directories and version controlled projects as well.
"Meld helps you review code changes and understand patches," the official website says. "It might even help you to figure out what is going on in that merge you keep avoiding." The tool is licensed under GPL v2.
### Meld Installation
If you are using Ubuntu or any-other Debian-based Linux distro, you can download and install Meld using the following command:
sudo apt-get install meld
Alternatively, you can also use your system's package manager to download the tool. For example, on Ubuntu, you can use the Ubuntu Software Center, or [Ubuntu Software][8], which has replaced the former starting version 16.04 of the OS.
However, it may be possible that the version of Meld in Ubuntu's official repositories is old. So, in that case if you want to use a more recent version, you can download the package from [here][9].  If you choose this method, then all you have to do is to extract the downloaded package, and then run the 'meld' binary present under the 'bin' folder:
~/Downloads/meld-3.14.2/bin$ **./meld** 
FYI, following are the packages that Meld requires:
* Python 2.7 (Python 3.3 in development)
* GTK+ 3.14
* GLib 2.36
* PyGObject 3.14
* GtkSourceView 3.14

### Meld Usage
When the tool is launched, you'll see a screen similar to the following:

So you have three options: File comparison, Directory comparison, and Version control view.
Click the 'File comparison' option, and you'll be asked to select the files to compare:

As clear from the screenshot above, Meld also lets you perform 3-way comparisons, but - in this first part of this article series - we'll stick to two-way comparisons that are more common.
Moving on, select the files that you want to compare and then click the 'Compare' button. You'll see that the tool opens both files side by side and also highlights the differing lines (as well as differences).

So the difference is in the second line of both files, and the actual difference is the extra '3' in the second line of file2\. Those black arrows that you see are there to perform the merge/change operation. The right arrow, in this case, will change the second line in 'file2' with the corresponding line from 'file1'. The left arrow will do vice-versa.
After making changes, you can do a Ctrl+s to save them.
So that was a simple example to let you know how Meld works on a basic level. Let's take a look at a slightly more complicated comparison:

Before discussing the changes, it's worth mentioning here that there are areas in Meld GUI that give you visual overview of the changes between the files. Specifically, what we're trying to bring into your notice here are vertical bars at the left and right-hand sides of the window. For example, see the following screenshot:

If you observe closely, the bar in the screenshot above contains some coloured blocks. These blocks are designed to give you an overview of all of the differences between the two files. "Each coloured block represents a section that is inserted, deleted, changed or in conflict between your files, depending on the block's colour used," the official documentation explains.
Now, let's come back to the example we were discussing. The following screenshots show how easy is to understand file changes (as well as merge them) when using Meld:

Moving on, so far, we jumped from one change to another by scrolling the files. However, there may be times when the files being compared are very large, making it difficult to scroll every time you want to jump to a change. For this, you can use the orange-colored arrows in the toolbar which itself sits above the editing area:

Here's how you do some of the common things while using Meld: You can use the standard Ctrl+f key-combination to find something in the editor area, press F11 key to make the tool go in full screen mode, and Ctrl+r to refresh (usually used when the any or both of files being compared have changed).
Following are some of the key features that the official Meld website advertises:
* Two- and three-way comparison of files and directories
* File comparisons update as you type
* Auto-merge mode and actions on change blocks help make merges easier
* Visualisations make it easier to compare your files
* Supports Git, Bazaar, Mercurial, Subversion, etc.
Note that the list above is not exhaustive. The website contains a dedicated [Features page][19] that contains an exhaustive list of features that Meld offers. All the features listed there are divided in sections based on whether the tool is being used for file comparison, directory comparison, version control, or in the merge mode.
Like any other software tool, there are certain things that Meld can't do. The official website lists at-least one of them: "When Meld shows differences between files, it shows both files as they would appear in a normal text editor. It does not insert additional lines so that the left and right sides of a particular change are the same size. There is no option to do this.".
### Conclusion
We've just scratched the surface here, as Meld is capable of doing a lot more. But it's ok for now, given that it's the first part of the tutorial series. Just to give you an idea about Meld's capabilities, you can configure the tool to ignore certain type of changes, ask it to move, copy or delete individual differences between files, as well as launch it from the command line. We'll discuss all these key functionalities in upcoming parts of this tutorial series.

Tuleap is a unique open source project management tool with great momentum right now, every month they have one major release. It's also been listed it in both the [Top 5 open source project management tools in 2015][1] and the [Top 11 project management tools for 2016][2].
"Tuleap is a complete GPLv2 platform to host software projects. It provides a central place where teams can find all the tools they need to track their software projects lifecycle successfully. They will find support for project management (scrum, kanban, waterfall, hybrid, etc.), source control (git and svn) and code review (pull requests and gerrit), continuous integration, issue tracking, wiki, and documentation," said Manuel Vacelet, co-founder and CTO of Enalean, the company behind the Tuleap project.
In this interview I talk with Manuel about how it all got started and how they manage Tuleap in an open source way.
**Nitish Tiwari (NT): Why does the Tuleap project matter? **
**Manuel Vacelet (MV):** Tuleap matters because we strongly believe that a successful (software) project must involve all the stakeholders: developers, project managers, QA, customers, and users.
A long time ago I was an intern on a fork of SourceForge (back when SourceForge was a free and open source project), and it would eventually become Tuleap years after. My first contribution was to integrate PhpWiki into the tool (don't tell anybody, the code is scary).
Now, I'm happy to work as CTO and product owner at Enalean, the main company contributing to the Tuleap project.
**NT: Tell us about the technical aspects.**
**MV:** Tuleap core system is LAMP-based and relies on CentOS. Today's development stack is done with AngularJS (v1) with a REST backend (PHP) and a NodeJS-based real-time server for push notification. But if you wish to be a fullstack Tuleap developer, you will also touch bash, Perl, Python, Docker, Make.
Speaking of technical aspects, it's important to underline that one of the distinctive features of Tuleap is its scalability. A single instance of Tuleap, on a single server, with no complicated IT, can handle over 10,000 people.
**NT: Tell us about the users and the community around the project. Who's involved? How do they use the tool?**
**MV:** The users are very varied. From small startups using Tuleap to keep track of their project advancement and manage their source code to very large companies, like the French telecom operator Orange, which deployed it to over 17,000 users and 5,000 projects hosted.
Many users rely on Tuleap to facilitate agile projects and track their progress. Developers and customers share the same workspace. There is no need for customers to learn how to use GitHub, nor for developers to have an additional layer of work to transcribe their work on a "customer accessible" platform.
This year, Tuleap is being used by the [Eclipse Foundation][3], replacing Bugzilla.
The Indian Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology has created the Government of India's platform for open collaborative development of e-governance applications using Tuleap.
Tuleap is used in a number of different ways and configurations. Some people use it as a backend for their Drupal customer facing websites; they plug via the REST API's into Tuleap to manage bugs and service requests.
Even some architects are using it to manage their work advancement and AutoCAD files.
**NT: Does Tuleap do anything special to make the community a safe and diverse place?**
**MV:** We haven't created a "Code of Conduct" yet; the community is really peaceful and welcoming, but we plan to do that. Tuleap developers and contributors come from different countries (i.e., Canada, Tunisia, France). And 35% of active developers and contributors are women.
**NT: What percentage of Tuleap features are suggested by the community?**
**MV:** Almost 100% of the features are community-driven.
It was one of Enalean's key challenges: to find a business model that allows us to do open source software the right way. To us, the "open core" model (where the core of the application is open, but the interesting and useful parts are closed source) is not the right way because you depend on closed source at the end of the day. So we invented the [OpenRoadmap][4], a way for us to gather needs from community and end users and find companies to pay for it.

During the Sun Microsystems days, I was genuinely interested in Solaris. There were frequent Solaris articles on Phoronix while Linux was always our main focus. Solaris was fun to play around with, OpenSolaris / SXCE was great, I ported the Phoronix Test Suite to Solaris, we had great relations with the Sun Microsystems folks, was at many Sun events, etc.

Unfortunately since Oracle acquired Sun, Solaris basically went downhill. The biggest blow was arguably when Oracle ended OpenSolaris and moved all their Solaris efforts back to a proprietary model...

**[ATI R500/600 Driver For Solaris Coming?][6]** 
_While no ATI fglrx driver is available for Solaris/OpenSolaris or *BSD, now that AMD will be offering up specifications to X.Org developers and an open-source driver, it certainly is promising for any Solaris user depending upon ATI's Radeon X1000 "R500" or HD 2000 "R600" series. The open-source X.Org driver that will be released next week is far from mature, but it should be able to be ported to Solaris and other operating systems using X.Org with relative ease. What AMD announced today is targeted for the Linux community, but it can certainly help out Solaris/OpenSolaris users that use ATI hardware. Especially with "Project Indiana" coming out soon, it's only a matter of time before the open-source R500/600 driver is ported. Tell us what you think in our Solaris forum._ 
**[Solaris Express Community Build 71][7]** 
_Build 71 of Solaris Express Community Edition (SXCE) is now available. You can find out more about Solaris Express Community Build 71 at OpenSolaris.org. On a side note, with news at the Linux Kernel Summit that AMD will be providing GPU specifications, the resulting X.Org driver could lead to an improved state for Solaris/OpenSolaris on ATI hardware in the future._ 
**[Farewell To OpenSolaris. Oracle Just Killed It Off.][8]** 
_Oracle has finally announced their plans for Solaris operating system and OpenSolaris platform and it's not good. OpenSolaris is now effectively dead and there will not be anymore OpenSolaris releases -- including the long-delayed 2010 release. Solaris will still live-on and Oracle is busy working on Solaris 11 for a release next year and there will be a "Solaris 11 Express" as being a similar product to OpenSolaris, but it will only ship after Oracle's enterprise release._ 
**[Solaris Express Community Build 72][9]** 
_For those of you wanting to try out the latest and greatest in OpenSolaris software right now prior to the release of "Project Indiana", build 72 of Solaris Express Community Edition is now available. Solaris Express Community Edition (SXCE) Build 72 can be downloaded from OpenSolaris.org. Meanwhile, the preview release of Sun's Project Indiana is expected next month._
**[OpenSolaris Developer Summit][10]** 
_Announced earlier today on the OpenSolaris Forums was the first-ever OpenSolaris Developer Summit. This summit is taking place in October at the University of California, Santa Cruz. Sara Dornsife describes this summit as "not a conference with presentations or exhibitors, but an in-person, collaborative working session to plan the next release of Project Indiana." Ian Murdock will be keynoting at this Project Indiana fest, but beyond that the schedule is still being planned. Phoronix may be covering this event and you can discuss this summit in our Solaris forums._ 
**[Solaris Containers For Linux][11]** 
_Sun Microsystems has announced that they will soon be supporting Solaris Containers for Linux applications. This will make it possible to run Linux applications under Solaris without any modifications to the binary package. The Solaris Containers for Linux will allow for a smoother migration from Linux to Solaris, assist in cross-platform development,and other benefits. As far as when the support will arrive, it's "coming soon"._ 
**[Oracle Still To Make OpenSolaris Changes][12]** 
_Since Oracle finished its acquisition of Sun Microsystems, there have been many changes to the open-source projects that were once supported under Sun now being discontinued by Oracle and significant changes being made to the remaining open-source products. One of the open-source projects that Oracle hasn't been too open about their intentions with has been OpenSolaris. Solaris Express Community Edition (SXCE) already closed up last month and there hasn't been too much information flowing out about the next OpenSolaris release, which is supposed to be known as OpenSolaris 2010.03 with a release date sometime in March._ 
**[Xen For Solaris Updated][13]** 
_It's been a while, but Xen for Solaris has finally been updated. John Levon poimts out that this latest build is based upon Xen 3.0.4 and Solaris "Nevada" Build 66\. Some of the improvements in this latest build include PAE support, HVM support, new virt-manager tools, improved debugging support, and last but not least is managed domain support. The download for the July 2007 Solaris Xen update can be found over at Sun's website._ 
**[IBM To Distribute Sun's Solaris][14]** 
_Sun Microsystems and IBM are holding a teleconference right now where they have just announced IBM will begin distributing Sun's Solaris operating system on select servers. These IBM servers include the x86-based system X servers as well as Blade Center Servers. The official press release has just been issued and can be read at the Sun news room._ 
**[Oracle Solaris 11 Kernel Source-Code Leaked][15]** 
_It appears that the kernel source-code to Solaris 11 was leaked onto the Internet this past weekend._ 
**[Solaris 12 Might Finally Bring Radeon KMS Driver][16]** 
_It looks like Oracle may be preparing to release their own AMD Radeon kernel mode-setting (KMS) driver for introducing into Oracle Solaris 12._ 
**[OpenSXCE 2013.05 Revives The Solaris Community][17]** 
_OpenSXCE 2013.05 is out in the wild as the community revival of the Solaris Express Community Edition._ 
**[OpenSolaris Will Not Merge With Linux][18]** 
_At LinuxWorld 2007 in San Francisco, Andrew Morton said during his keynote that no key components of OpenSolaris will appear in the Linux kernel. In fact, Morton had even stated that "Its a great shame that OpenSolaris still exists." Some of these key OpenSolaris components include Zones, ZFS, and DTrace. Though there is the possibility that Project Indiana could turn these into GPLv3 projects... More information is available at ZDNET._ 
**[Oracle Has Yet To Clarify Solaris 11 Kernel Source][19]** 
_It was one month ago that Phoronix was the first to note the Solaris 11 kernel source-code was leaked onto the Internet via Torrent sites. One month later, Oracle still hasn't officially commented on the situation._ 
**[Oracle Might Be Canning Solaris][20]** 
_Oracle might be pulling the plug on the Solaris operating system, at least according to some new rumors._ 
**[Solaris Express Community Build 70][21]** 
_Build 70 for Solaris Express Community Edition "Nevada" (SXCE snv_70) is now available. The announcement with download links can be found in the OpenSolaris Forums. Also announced was the 71st build of their Network Storage that includes source-code from Qlogic for the fibre channel HBA driver._ 
**[Solaris 10 7/07 HW Release][22]** 
_The documentation is now online for the Solaris 10 7/07 HW Release. As noted on the Solaris Releases page, Solaris 10 7/07 is only for SPARC Enterprise M4000-M9000 servers and no x86/x64 version is available. The latest Solaris update for all platforms is Solaris 10 11/06\. You can discuss Solaris 7/07 in the Phoronix Forums._ 
**[Solaris Telecom Servers From Intel][23]** 
_Intel has announced today the availability of Intel-powered Sun Solaris telecommunications rack and blade servers that meet NEBS, ETSI, and ATCA compliance. Of these new carrier grade platforms, the Intel Carrier Grade Rack Mount Server TIGW1U supports both Linux and Solaris 10 and the Intel NetStructure MPCBL0050 SBC will support both operating systems as well. **[The Sad State Of GPU Drivers For BSD, Solaris][24]** 
_Yesterday a discussion arose on the mailing list about killing off all the old Mesa drivers. These old drivers aren't actively maintained, support vintage graphics processors, and aren't updated to support new Mesa functionality. They're now also getting in the way as Intel and other developers work to clean up the core of Mesa as they bolster this open-source graphics library for the future. There's also some implications for BSD and Solaris users by this move to clean-up Mesa._

_Over the past few weeks we have been providing several in-depth articles looking at the performance of Ubuntu Linux. We had begun by providing Ubuntu 7.04 to 8.10 benchmarks and had found the performance of this popular Linux distribution to become slower with time and that article was followed up with Mac OS X 10.5 vs. Ubuntu 8.10 benchmarks and other articles looking at the state of Ubuntu's performance. In this article, we are now comparing the 64-bit performance of Ubuntu 8.10 against the latest test releases of OpenSolaris 2008.11 and FreeBSD 7.1._ 
**[NVIDIA Performance: Windows vs. Linux vs. Solaris][28]** 
_Earlier this week we previewed the Quadro FX1700, which is one of NVIDIA's mid-range workstation graphics cards that is based upon the G84GL core that in turn is derived from the consumer-class GeForce 8600 series. This PCI Express graphics card offers 512MB of video memory with two dual-link DVI connections and support for OpenGL 2.1 while maintaining a maximum power consumption of just 42 Watts. **[FreeBSD 8.0 Benchmarked Against Linux, OpenSolaris][29]** 
_With the stable release of FreeBSD 8.0 arriving last week we finally were able to put it up on the test bench and give it a thorough look over with the Phoronix Test Suite. We compared the FreeBSD 8.0 performance between it and the earlier FreeBSD 7.2 release along with Fedora 12 and Ubuntu 9.10 on the Linux side and then the OpenSolaris 2010.02 b127 snapshot on the Sun OS side._

The performance of these 45nm quad-core workstation/server processors were great when compared to the earlier AMD Barcelona processors on Ubuntu Linux, but how is their performance when running Sun's OpenSolaris operating system? Up for viewing today are dual AMD Shanghai benchmarks when running OpenSolaris 2008.11, Ubuntu 8.10, and a daily build of the forthcoming Ubuntu 9.04 release._ 
**[OpenSolaris vs. Linux Kernel Benchmarks][32]** 
_Earlier this week we delivered benchmarks of Ubuntu 9.04 versus Mac OS X 10.5.6 and found that the Leopard operating system had performed better than the Jaunty Jackalope in a majority of the tests, at least when it came to Ubuntu 32-bit. We are back with more operating system benchmarks today, but this time we are comparing the performance of the Linux and Sun OpenSolaris kernels. We had used the Nexenta Core Platform 2 operating system that combines the OpenSolaris kernel with a GNU/Ubuntu user-land to that of the same Ubuntu package set but with the Linux kernel. Testing was done with both 32-bit and 64-bit Ubuntu server installations._ 
**[Netbook Performance: Ubuntu vs. OpenSolaris][33]** 
_In the past we have published OpenSolaris vs. Linux Kernel benchmarks and similar articles looking at the performance of Sun's OpenSolaris up against popular Linux distributions. We have looked at the performance on high-end AMD workstations, but we have never compared the OpenSolaris and Linux performance on netbooks. Well, not until today. In this article we have results comparing OpenSolaris 2009.06 and Ubuntu 9.04 on the Dell Inspiron Mini 9 netbook._ 
**[NVIDIA Graphics: Linux vs. Solaris][34]**

We were far from being impressed by Preview 2 as it hadn't possessed any serious advantages over a GNU/Linux desktop that would interest normal users. However, with the release of OpenSolaris 2008.05 "Project Indiana" coming up in May, Sun Microsystems has today released a final test copy of this operating system. Our initial experience with this new OpenSolaris release is vastly better than what we had encountered less than three months ago when last looking at Project Indiana._ 
**[A Quick Tour Of Oracle Solaris 11][36]** 
_Solaris 11 was released on Wednesday as the first major update to the former Sun operating system in seven years. A lot has changed in the Solaris stack in the past seven years, and OpenSolaris has come and gone in that time, but in this article is a brief look through the brand new Oracle Solaris 11 release._ 
**[New Benchmarks Of OpenSolaris, BSD & Linux][37]** 
_Earlier today we put out benchmarks of ZFS on Linux via a native kernel module that will be made publicly available to bring this Sun/Oracle file-system over to more Linux users. Now though as a bonus we happen to have new benchmarks of the latest OpenSolaris-based distributions, including OpenSolaris, OpenIndiana, and Augustiner-Schweinshaxe, compared to PC-BSD, Fedora, and Ubuntu._

_While FreeBSD 9.1 has yet to be officially released, the FreeBSD-based PC-BSD 9.1 "Isotope" release has already been made available this month.
