The Gecko Version of Midori Browser is Here!
======
Good to hear about a new Gecko-based browser. Sounds interesting!
We last heard about Midori back when [AstianGO was integrated][1] into the open-source browser for providing a more privacy-friendly search experience.
Even though **the Midori web browser has been around since 2007** , the development of it has seen its share of changes along the years, with the most major one being the merge with the [Astian Foundation][2] back in 2019.
After the merge, Midori **was an electron-powered browser based on Chromium** with a few privacy protection features in the mix.
However, Midori **has since parted ways with Chromium** for the next best thing, [**Gecko**][3], which you must've seen being used in browsers such as [**Firefox**][4], [**LibreWolf**][5], [**Tor Browser**][6] and more.
Allow me to show you what the **Gecko-based Midori 11 release** has to offer.
### Midori 11: What to Expect?
![][7]
Dubbed as the “ **fastest and lightest** ” version of Midori ever, this release has plenty of improvements to offer over its predecessors.
Some key highlights include:
* **Gecko-Based Revamp**
* **Visual Upgrades**
* **Workspaces Support**
#### Gecko-Based Revamp
![][8]
According to the developers, **basing Midori on Gecko has resulted in up to 15% better performance** compared to Chromium-based browsers, and **a bigger 20% uptick in performance** when compared to older Midori versions.
They also claim that **even though the memory consumption has increased** , they can still provide a lightweight and fast browsing experience.
#### Visual Upgrades
![][9]
The most obvious visual change with Midori is the **new sidebar menu** that comes with all the usual browser options such as Bookmarks, History, Downloads, and Notes. Pretty useful, kind of like Vivaldi offers.
There is also **support for WebApps** , by default, Midori includes the apps for **Google Translate** and **Astian Cloud**.
You **can also add other apps** such as Telegram, WhatsApp Web, or even other websites that support such functionality.
Then there are the **refreshed icons** across the browser, and **improved default themes** alongside the introduction of **two new themes, “Midori Fluerial UI” and “GNOME”.**
![][10]
Midori 11 also features **better tab management** , and **support for Light/Dark themes** , which can be set to follow your system's setting.
![][11]
#### Workspaces Support
![][12]
You must've noticed the “Work” title on all the screenshots above. Well, that is the **new “Workspaces” feature** in action.
With Midori 11, you can now **use multiple workspaces to multitask effortlessly**. You will first have to enable it via the settings to get started.
Go into the settings menu, then search for 'workspaces', then click on “Enable Workspaces”.
Thereafter, you can go into the “Workspace Settings…” menu for tweaking it further and add new workspaces.
![][13]
You can also **set specific icons to the workspaces** to differentiate between them easily.
**Suggested Read** 📖
![][14]
When all is set, you can switch between the workspaces by clicking on them in the sidebar.
![][15]
Midori will even **backup your workspaces at random time intervals** so that you don't lose them in the event of an abrupt shutdown.
Personally, I would like more web browsers based on Gecko, rather than Chromium.
And with what I experienced in my short usage with Midori 11, I can say that this **has the** **potential to be an[ **open-source Chrome alternative**][16] for Linux**.
That being said, **I did face some weird bugs** here and there, nothing a few patches can't fix, though.
#### 🛠️ Other changes
As for the rest of the improvements, here are some notable ones:
* Midori now **supports OTA updates** , similar to what you see on Firefox.
* It is now **possible to import browser data** from browsers like Vivaldi, Opera, Chrome, etc.
* [**Multi-Account Containers**][17] support for sorting your browsing into different color-coded tabs.
* Native integration with its **MidoriVPN** and [**Astian Cloud**][18] **** services.
You may go through the [official blog post][19] to learn more about this release.
### 📥 Get Midori 11
This new Gecko-based release of Midori is available for **Linux** , **Windows** , and **Android**. You can head over to the [official website][20] to grab the package of your choice.
[Midori][20]
If you are interested in the source code, you can visit Midori's [GitLab repo][21] for that.
I really hope they make it available on the [Flathub store][22] and the [Snap store][23] in the future for a more accessible experience for Linux users.

Audacity 3.4 Release Adds a New Musical View
======
Audacity 3.4 makes it a better audio editor for musicians. Take a look!
Many consider Audacity as a useful audio editor or maybe even a digital audio workstation (DAW) to some extent.
In the past, we have noticed that with every point release, take, for example, [Audacity 3.2][1] there are important improvements on offer.
Continuing the trend is the recently introduced **Audacity 3.4** release, here with some new features and bug fixes.
Let's go through them.
**Suggested Read** 📖
![][2]
## 🆕 Audacity 3.4: What's New?
![][3]
As a point release, this release has some important new features to offer, such as:
* **New Musical View**
* **Better Exporting**
* **New Time Stretching Feature**
### New Musical View
![][4]
A new “ **Beats and measures grid** ” musical view has been added to Audacity that allows you to **easily align audio clips according to the tempo and rhythm of a project**.
The grid shows subdivisions of each measure according to the zoom level, and the clips can also be snapped to the nearest beat.
📋
You can access this by right-clicking anywhere on the ruler and selecting “Beats and Measures”.
### Better Exporting
![][5]
The exporter has been revamped, and now gives you **all the options in a single window** , that includes **a native file browser** , **format selection** , **audio options** and even **advanced options for 5.1 surround exports**.
### Time Stretching Feature
![][6]
It is now possible to **change the duration of audio clips without harming the pitch** of it.
This was thanks to the implementation of a **new time stretching algorithm** that has been tailored for music. The developers claim that it **outperforms many commercially available options**.
📋
Just hold the 'Alt' (for macOS: Option) button while hovering over the top third of a clip edge to start stretching.
### 🛠️ Other Changes
Other than that, here are some other notable changes:
* In-built **support for[ **Opus**][7]**.
* The **project sample rate doesn't change** randomly when importing audio.
* The **spectrogram colors have been improved** to look more uniform.
* **Stereo tracks have been simplified** , the left and right channels will now always have synced clip starts and ends, with the same sample rate on both channels.
You can also go through the [official blog][8] or the video linked below to know more about this release.
## 📥 Download Audacity 3.4
As Audacity is **a cross-platform app** , this new release is available for **Linux** , **Windows** , and **macOS** from the [official site][9] and its [GitHub repo][10].

Actual: An Open-Source Privacy-Friendly Personal Finance App
======
A fairly new open-source finance app with privacy in mind.
Earlier last year, Actual, a personal finance app, decided to [open-source][1] its source code in a bid to ensure the continuation of its development.
Back then, the main reason behind that move was that **the lead developer was unable to juggle between a full-time job and the 'Actual' project** , even hiring people had to be ruled out owing to cost concerns.
For those unfamiliar, Actual is a privacy-focused app that allows you to manage your personal finances by providing you with **a neat user interface** and **seamless syncing across devices**.
With this article, we shall see how Actual operates now, and what kind of functionality is on offer.
Let's dig in!
### A Super Fast Open-Source Finance App
![][2]
Actual primarily uses **TypeScript** and **JavaScript** as its foundation, with a hint of C++/C here and there. Going open has allowed a lot of its previous features to stay intact, and even made way for various improvements over them.
Some **key feature highlights** include:
* **Easy transaction tracking.**
* **Fine-tuned for fast performance.**
* **Dedicated budgeting options.**
* **Intuitive reporting of transactions.**
There is even support for **optional end-to-end encryption** , **multi-device sync** , **importing of transactions** from popular financial file formats, and more.
Of course, the ability to generate reports should be helpful for everyone who decides to manage personal finance using the app:
![][3]
Unfortunately, you do not get an option to use any official hosted instance. So, it will be **a completely self-hostable experience** (cloud or local).
That is not entirely a bad thing, though, as **many privacy-conscious users swear by self-hosting apps** to get the most secure experience possible. Sure, if you have never self-hosted services, you might want to explore its documentation first.
Actual also has a neat option where **you can[ **instantly deploy**][4] it on PikaPods**, pricing starts at **$1.4 per month**.
In a nutshell, your data should remain secure if you use a local-first personal finance app like Actual.
![][5]
📋
You can refer to the [official documentation][6] to get started with self-hosting on the cloud or locally on your computer.
Furthermore, since going open, **Actual has been receiving a steady flow of updates.**
The recent [Actual 23.11.0][7] release came in with **s** tability improvements, tweaks, and bug fixes.
I even checked out Actual's GitHub repo, and the commit activity has been pretty good ever since it landed on GitHub. See for yourself. 👇
![][8]
I am glad to see that the contributors for Actual can pull this off quite gracefully by regularly pushing updates that matter.
If you are **interested in trying out Actual** , then you can visit its [official website][9] or try out the [live demo][10]. For those who want to **contribute to the code** , I highly suggest you head over to the [GitHub repo][11] to get started.
[Actual (GitHub)][11]
I think that Actual can be a great contender for our [best open-source accounting software][12] list.
![][13]
_💬 What do you think about Actual? Will to give it a try? Have you used it before?_

So, Google Wants Firefox Users to Have a Poor YouTube Experience?
======
YouTube loads up slower on Firefox, just because Google wants it to or
not?
It has been just over a month since [Mozilla announced that they are collaborating with Google's web services][1] team to improve the user experience.
And, now, we are learning of an interesting phenomenon.
YouTube seems to be loading slower for Firefox users compared to Chrome 🤯
Wait, what? Is that a deliberate thing, or is Chrome a better browser even if [Firefox is one of the best browsers][2]? Let me highlight all about what's happening here.
### YouTube Pushing Monetization Aggressively
It is no surprise that recently YouTube has been encouraging everyone to allow advertisements or subscribe to YouTube premium.
Of course, with the increase in adblocker options and privacy-focused browsers blocking the ads by default, the ad revenue must have bled significantly.
While all of that is a business side of things, deliberately breaking the YouTube experience for Firefox users, should that be even a thing?
Well, as per numerous Redditors ([1][3], [2][4]), whenever you try to access YouTube videos as a Firefox user, the **webpage adds a five-second delay**. And, right after you change the user agent using developer tweaks or change the browser, the delay is not observed.
![Source: r/firefox][5]
Of course, all the users are not making things up. They must have faced the issue.
I tried to reproduce the issue with uBlock Origin extension enabled and disabled, but YouTube worked fine for me. You can try the [solution mentioned by uBlock][6], adding a filter to bypass the delay if you face it.
If you are curious, a [Redditor][7] set out to point out to a code in a [JavaScript file][8] (polymer js) where they added a five-second delay:
```
setTimeout(function(){c();a.resolve(1)},5E3);
```
You can check for yourself. But, we are not sure if this is specifically for Firefox.
To this fiasco, YouTube has provided a statement to [AndroidAuthority][9] where they say:
> _**To support a diverse ecosystem of creators globally and allow billions to access their favorite content on YouTube, weve launched an effort to urge viewers with ad blockers enabled to allow ads on YouTube or try YouTube Premium for an ad free experience. Users who have ad blockers installed may experience suboptimal viewing, regardless of the browser they are using.**_
Honestly, this statement sounds more like " _we can neither confirm or deny that this piece code targets Firefox users_ ". **I do not claim anything, either.**
In a nutshell, YouTube means to say that this issue only affects users with adblockers. And, if that is the case, why were the Redditors able to bypass this issue by changing the user agent?
Pretty confusing, isn't it? (or is it supposed to be?)
### Polymer JavaScript, Ring a Bell?
Interestingly, [TechRadar][10] reported in 2018 that Mozilla's Technical Program Manager accused Google's YouTube redesign making the performance worse for Firefox users.
And, the highlight of the YouTube redesign back then was **Google's Polymer technology**.
The code that the Redditors pointed out exists in one of the files for that same tech used in YouTube's webpage. Coincidence?
Or, is it that Google has always been hard at work to cleverly dial down the user experience on the competitor browsers like Firefox? 🤦
### Google Being Google
Google and its products are constantly in the line of fire when it comes to anticompetitive behavior, privacy, or user-conflicting changes.
Considering YouTube is a major platform, and it can genuinely encourage users unaware to switch from Firefox to Chrome if they face such an issue.
**Suggested Read** 📖
![][11]
Despite all of that, I suggest you should give [Firefox a try][12] for its strong privacy-focused features.
