Vivaldi is a Chromium-based cross-platform web browser known for providing impressive functionalities, focusing on multitasking features.

||||

||||
It recently received a new release with some pretty exciting additions.
|
||||
|
||||
Seeing that Vivaldi is mostly [open-source][2] (except for its UI), it's interesting to see the improvements Vivaldi 6.0 brings. You can consider it an excellent alternative to Chrome and Edge.

### 🆕 What’s New in Vivaldi 6.0?

||||
|
||||
There are **two major highlights** to this release. Here they are:

#### 🎨 Custom Icons
|
||||

||||

The theming setup of Vivaldi was already one of the very well-equipped ones you could find on a modern web browser, and that functionality has been given a **major boost with the introduction of custom icons**.

As you can see above, Vivaldi's in-built theming tools now allow you to use custom icons for the various buttons around the browser.

||||
|
||||

The tab management feature on Vivaldi helps immensely while multitasking, and now they have **raised the bar even higher** by including a **Workspaces** feature.
|
||||
|
||||
The Workspaces feature on Vivaldi allows you to have different spaces for your set of tabs. Instead of just stacking them together, you can now find them organized in a Workspace.
|
||||
|
||||

||||
Similar to what many desktop environments offer, each Workspace will only contain the tabs that were added to it. You can use the switcher to **switch between workspaces effortlessly**.

||||
|
||||
The best part is that it also supports Vivaldi's tab stacking and tiling features, resulting in a very **utility-focused experience**.
|
||||
|
||||
To create a Workspace, click on the '**Workspaces**' button in your tab panel, and get started by giving it a name, then add an emoji or icon to spice it up.
|
||||
|
||||
You can also search for any tabs from the Workspace using the search bar from the Windows side panel.
|
||||
|
||||
This feature is enabled by default; you can disable it from the Settings menu under **Tabs → Tab Features**.

||||

Ubuntu MATE 23.04 has arrived. It may not as cool as you'd expect, but it is good!

Ubuntu MATE 23.04 is here! As usual, it is one of the most exciting [Ubuntu flavours][2] available.
|
||||
|
||||
Not to forget, [Ubutu MATE 22.10][3] included some new MATE desktop feature upgrades along with AI wallpapers being added to the collection.
|
||||
|
||||
Let me mention some of the key highlights of this release.

||||

### Ubuntu MATE 23.04: What's New?

||||
|
||||

Some of the biggest Ubuntu MATE changes include:
|
||||
|
||||
- **Dropping Flatpak by default**
|
||||
- **PipeWire replaces PulseAudio**
|
||||
- **Linux Kernel 6.2**
|
||||
- **New wallpapers**
|
||||
|
||||
Ubuntu MATE was one of the flavours that featured Flatpak support by default.
|
||||
|
||||
Of course, users who prefer [Flatpak over Snap][5] favored Ubuntu MATE for its out-of-the-box support on Ubuntu MATE 22.10 or older.

||||

||||
Unfortunately, with Ubuntu MATE 23.04, users will have to manually [setup Flatpak][7] if they want it. Canonical [recently made this decision][8] for all its flavours, if you did not know.

|
||||
**MATE desktop environment** has seen some subtle improvements, and gets a minor version bump with MATE 1.26.1 as its version pre-installed. You can also notice some icon updates throughout the system.
|
||||
|
||||
Next, with PipeWire as its sound server, you should have no issues with detecting various sound devices/sources.
|
||||
|
||||
Of course, [Linux Kernel 6.2][9] should also compliment to that with better hardware compatibility and refinements.

Ubuntu Budgie 23.04 brings in all the goodness of the latest Budgie desktop with several refinements.

One of the [official Ubuntu flavours][2], **Ubuntu Budgie** is a lightweight yet customizable distro employing the sleek-looking and independently-developed Budgie desktop environment.

|
||||
Ubuntu Budgie 23.04, based on Ubuntu 23.04 'Lunar Lobstar', includes various improvements and bug fixes, especially related to the user interface. There are a couple of significant new additions as well.

Budgie Menu brings in the handy switcheroo-control tool that displays which graphics card is in use, thus allowing you to switch between GPUs when launching applications freely.

### New Raven Widgets

||||
A significant change brought by Budgie 10.7.1 is the implementation of Raven - a widget API system. This move allows third-party developers to extend capabilities and designs to existing widgets or create custom widgets.

It was introduced with Budgie 10.7 release and gets more improvements this time.

||||

Users can access and manage Raven widgets in the Budgie Desktop Settings.

Previously, it was only possible to hide unwanted widgets. But now, that feature has been discarded, and users can remove them altogether. Furthermore, each widget's position can be rearranged by sorting them from top to bottom.

||||
|
||||
The existing widgets have received some fixes and updates, along with adding a new widget called Usage Monitor that displays the usage of CPU, RAM, and swap memory usage.

### Revamped Widget Selection
|
||||
|
||||
The Budgie Desktop Settings features a new look for the widget selection modal. This includes adding new Raven and panel widgets.

The design is user- and developer-friendly since it displays useful information like the developer's name, website, description of the widget, and copyright.

Solus Linux Goes Through Yet Another Shake Up; to be Rebased on SerpentOS

||||
Every Linux distro goes through at lest one big change at some point in its life span. However, there is one distro that seems to keep encountering major turmoil and changes on a regular basis. Let's look at the latest news coming from Solus.
|
||||
|
||||
### Solus? What's That?
|
||||
|
||||
There are approximately six billion Linux distros (or so it seems). Most of them are reskins of Ubuntu or Arch, with at least one new feature added or highlighted. I can count on one hand the [number of distros that are actually built from scratch][2]. Solus is one of them.
|
||||
|
||||
According to [Solus' website][3], "Solus is built from scratch to ensure every tweak, configuration, and optimization enables the delivery of a singular, cohesive desktop experience." All the important system tools, from the build tools to the package manager, have been built from scratch. They even created their own desktop environment named [Budgie][4]. (Budgie had since been spun off to be an independent project.)

### What New in Solusville?
|
||||
|
||||
Tuesday, the Solus team made a [blog post announcing][5] some changes to the future of the distro. First, they are moving to a new build and development infrastructure. Previously, they had been hosted by the Rochester Institute of Technology. Only one member of the dev team had access to this infrastructure. In January 2023, there was a "hardware-level issue" that caused three months of downtime.
|
||||
|
||||
Around the time of the outage, [SerpentOS][6] (former Solus lead-dev and founder Ikey Doherty's newest project) reached out to Solus to offer hosting. According to the post, "Concerned by the continuing outage and its impact on Solus users and contributors, the Serpent OS team then shared a proposal which would allow Solus to resume operations with less technical debt and mitigation of the apparent bus factor of one."
|
||||
|
||||
A new organizational structure has also emerged from this collaboration. Several members of the SerpentOS team (who had left Solus in the last couple of years) will take over duties at Solus. The responsibilities of the Solus project will be divided up into six teams: Technical Steering Committee, Infrastructure and Operations, Community Engagement and Communications, Stack Maintainers, Package Maintainers, and Web Developers. Moving forward, Solus wants to be more open and transparent. Previously, if a member of the dev team wanted to share something they were working on, they had to get permission from one person, kinds of a communication czar. Going forward, team members will be encouraged to share what they are working, both via blog posts and streaming their work.

As for the distro itself, Solus will be delivering new ISOs for the 4.x branch with updated kernels and desktop environments so that it can run on modern hardware. They will also be working on "maintenance and quality-of-life tweaks" to the current dev tools. In the coming weeks, the team will be evaluating their custom tools to see how to move forward.

Early on, Solus was known for innovation. The post notes that "innovation in the Linux ecosystem is presently centered around the use of application sandboxing, containers and the development of immutable operating systems". Unfortunately, the current Solus tooling is not designed to handle this. So, **the team has decided to take a big step and rebase the distro on SerpentOS**.

### Now, what is this SerpentOS?
|
||||
|
||||
You might have noticed [SerpentOS][7] being mentioned several times in this article and wonder what the heck it is. It is a new distro. In fact, it was [started two years ago][8]. Ikey Doherty created it from scratch with a new build system and package manager. According to the website:

> Serpent OS strives to provide the perfect hybrid experience - a traditional, package management driven Linux distribution powered by the latest technologies. Stateless by design with atomic updates at the core, Serpent OS aims to close the gap between development and production.

||||
|
||||
The Solus blog post concludes by stating that moving to SerpentOS tooling and systems will allow Solus to:
|
||||
|
||||
- Shed technical debt in terms of tools and development processes
|
||||
- Offer seamlessly integrated from-source user repositories, finally making the much asked for Solus User Repository a reality, as well enabling users to self-host personal from-source repositories
|
||||
- Become an atomic and immutable operating system with the benefits that this entails in terms of reliability and security
|
||||
- Be ported to other architectures than x86_64, such as AArch64 and RISC-V, in the future
|
||||
|
||||
### Change is Not New to Solus
|
||||
|
||||
I find this whole story fascinating. It is just the latest in a series of shake ups at Solus. Back in 2018, Ikey (the founder and lead dev of the project) [departed the project][9]. Two years later, Ikey announced that he was working on an [open source game engine][10] named Serpent. Apparently, Ikey got frustrated with the development tooling available in other Linux distros, so he set about creating his own from scratch in [June of 2020][11]. Then, in January 2022, [Joshua Strobl][12] who had been the lead dev of Budgie and co-lead dev of Solus left Solus and forked Budgie. And now both Ikey and Josh are returning to Solus and flipping it on it's head.

||||
After Ikey left Solus, it floundered for a while, and frankly I lost interest in it. Now he's back with basically a new OS. It feels a lot like when Steve Jobs returned to Apple in 1997. He brought with him a new operating system that became Mac OS X and saved Apple. Hopefully, Ikey can do the same with Solus.

QEMU, the popular emulator and virtualization tool, has just released version 8.0.0, featuring over 2800 commits from 238 authors. This release introduces a wide range of improvements and new features across multiple architectures.
|
||||
|
||||
Users can download the tarball from QEMU’s download page, and review the full list of changes in the changelog.

||||
|
||||
Among the highlights is new ARM support for emulation of FEAT_EVT, FEAT_FGT, and AArch32 ARMv8-R, CPU emulation for Cortex-A55 and Cortex-R52, and a new Olimex STM32 H405 machine type. There is also gdbstub support for M-profile system registers.

||||
|
||||
HPPA has gained support for the fid (Floating-Point Identify) instruction and 32-bit emulation improvements. RISC-V also gets a lot of attention, with additional ISA and Extension support for smstateen, native debug icount trigger, cache-related PMU events in virtual mode, and ACPI support. RISC-V’s machine support for OpenTitan, PolarFire, and OpenSBI has also been updated. Additionally, there are numerous emulation/virtualization improvements, including PMP propagation for TLB, mret exceptions, uncompressed instructions, and other fixes.

s390x has seen improvements in zPCI passthrough device handling and support for asynchronous teardown of memory of secure KVM guests during reboot. x86 support now includes Xen guests under KVM with Linux v5.12+, a new SapphireRapids CPU model, and TCG support for FSRM, FZRM, FSRS, and FSRC CPUID flags. Finally, virtio-mem now supports preallocation in conjunction with live migration, and qemu-nbd has improved efficiency over TCP and when using TLS.

KaOS, the independent rolling distribution built from scratch, has [released][2] its latest version, KaOS 2023.04, with a new experimental Plasma 6 ISO. This release features many updated components of the system, including KDE Gear (22.12.2) and Frameworks (5.105.0), all built on Qt 5.15.9+.

||||
|
||||
KaOS 2023.04 features new applications such as Tokodon, which brings the Mastodon federated social media platform to your fingertips, and Signal Desktop, a privacy-focused messenger application. Due to the growing popularity of Mastodon, Tokodon is a nice addition to this distro.
|
||||
|
||||
The new Kjournald option lets users view logs from a GUI with various filter options in the left-hand pane, which is now a part of the default install. Among the changes included in KDE Gear 23.04 are the option to run Dolphin with kio-admin, a total redesign of the user interface for Spectacle, and nested timelines support in Kdenlive.

||||

Few major updates in this release includes OpenSSL 3.0.8, CLang/LLVM 16.0.1, Libtiff 4.5.0, Sqlite 3.41.2, Linux kernel 6.2.11, Systemd 253.3, Python 3.10.11, Dracut 059, ZFS 2.1.10, Gnupg 2.4.0, and Libarchive 3.6.2.

The inclusion of Qt 6.5.0 has brought many improvements, including porting from Qt5 and test applications built on qt6-webengine, such as web browsers. The latest applications that are now using Qt6 are OBS-studio and Qbittorrent. Additionally, Kvantum theming has support for Qt6.

||||
This release also includes a new feature that allows users to verify the integrity of the written USB flash drive compared to the downloaded ISO file. Users can do this in Dolphin by right-clicking on the ISO file, selecting Actions, and then Verify ISO Write.

||||
KaOS 2023.04 also includes LibreOffice as the default office application instead of Calligra, thanks to its complete Qt5/Kf5 support.
|
||||
|
||||
A new welcome app, Croeso, helps with configuring a new install, including 15 commonly used settings, a custom wallpaper selector, distribution info, and the option to select packages to install from six different groups. It is written in QML and fits well with the Welcome application used in the Live system, which includes an installation guide.

The [new experimental Plasma 6 ISO][4] in KaOS 2023.04 is an exciting opportunity for those who want to try out the latest Plasma desktop environment. And it can only work as a live medium.
