Kali Linux 2023.2 Release Adds a New Hyper-V Image and PipeWire to XFCE Variant
======
Kali Linux 2023.2 is a good upgrade with new feature additions and enhancements.
![kali linux 2023.2 release][1]
The [penetration testing-focused][2] Kali Linux distro has been around for some time now. Its robust set of tools has made it the de facto choice for many pen testers worldwide.
Earlier[this year][3], they **celebrated their 10th Anniversary** by launching a new '**Kali Purple**' distro. Now they have a new Kali Linux release that promises to offer some exciting improvements.
Let's go through it.
### 🆕 Kali Linux 2023.2: What's New?
![a screenshot of the neofetch output on kali linux 2023.2][4]
Kali Linux 2023.2 is a packed release, with [Linux Kernel 6.1][5] powering it. Some notable highlights of this release include:
- **PipeWire Support**
- **Desktop Upgrades**
- **Updated App Icons and Menu**
#### PipeWire Support
![a screenshot of the pipewire implementation on kali linux 2023.2][6]
Kali Linux's default desktop, **XFCE, now uses** [**PipeWire**][7] for handling all the audio and video tasks across the system.
But, as you can see, its **implementation is slightly different than usual**. They had to use the compatibility layer '[**pipewire-pulse**][8]' to make it happen on XFCE, as it does not support it by default.
As an end-user, you won't notice anything different except the improvements offered by PipeWire over PulseAudio.
#### Desktop Upgrades
Kali Linux 2023.2 features some extensive upgrades for the various desktop experiences.
**In the case of XFCE**, apart from the PipeWire integration, a pre-installed extension is offered for the file manager called '[GtkHash][9]'.
This is meant to provide a simple way to **quickly compute checksums**, one has to simply right-click on a file and open the 'Checksums' tab, doing away with the need to open a terminal.
![][10]
**In the case of GNOME**, this release of Kali Linux now features [GNOME 44][11], which will give you access to various new features such as an **improved quick settings menu**, **better file manager**, **file thumbnails,** and more.
![][12]
That's not all; the devs have also introduced a new extension called '[Tiling Assistant][13]' for the GNOME version of Kali.
This extension now puts the GNOME version of Kali on par with the tiling experience found on the likes of KDE and XFCE.
The **Kali i3 desktop received a complete rework** with many improvements across the board; a long-time user of i3 and Kali contributor, Arszilla worked on it.
![][14]
Though, keep in mind that if you want to try this out, the easiest way would be to build a custom installer ISO that has an i3 desktop.
You can refer to its [GitHub repo][15] for more info.
#### Updated App Icons and Menu
![][16]
Starting with this release, the developers of Kali Linux will be updating the app icons for the top 100 tools listed [here][17], as well as enhancing the menu use experience.
#### 🛠️ Other Changes and Improvements
Other than the changes mentioned above, here are a few that are worth noting:
- **A new Hyper-V image for better performance on virtual machines.**
- **Python PIP behavior changes.**
- **Various updates to Kali ARM.**
- **Kali WSL rootfs build-script has been overhauled.**
- **New tools such as Cosign, Eksctl, GoPhish, Trivy and more.**

GNOME 45 to Redesign Display Options and Fractional Scaling Tweaks
======
GNOME is planning to have a revamped display settings to make it easy for users to understand fractional scaling.
![gnome 45][1]
GNOME is one of the most popular desktop environment choices out there. Used by many distros, it's a community favorite.
With every major release, GNOME gets many new features and improvements. This time around, we seem to have an early sneak peek at one of them.
It was just a while back when we mentioned that GNOME is considering bringing [back the terminal app][2], and adding a [new webcam app][3] and an [image viewer][4].
**What's Happening:** According to a recent GitLab issue posted by [Allan Day][5] from the GNOME design team, we might be getting a **redesigned display settings menu** with an **updated option for Fractional Scaling**.
He mentions:
> The current fractional scaling setting is just a long list of percentage options. If this setting is going to be exposed more widely (which I think it is), we ought to do a better job. Specifically, we need to reduce the number of options presented and ideally have some kind of preview.The other thing we need is a switch for the legacy compatibility mode, to allow overriding the defaults, in order for people to use certain X11 apps.
Well, he is not wrong. The current Fractional Scaling setup is just a percentage slider, which is not that user-friendly.
Luckily, the redesign looks much easier to use. Alan **shared a few mockups** that give an idea of how the redesigned display settings might look in the future.
As you can see below, the percentage slider has been replaced with a more intuitive selection window. It shows an example text (preview) with the scaling percentage.
![][6]
The preview text here is not final. It can have a different text or something more detailed to give users a preview of what they can expect with a scaling setting.
However, adding a preview should make it clearer to what scaling does to new users.
There is also an option to enable '**Legacy HiDPI Compatibility**' that **will enable Fractional Scaling**.
He also shared a mockup for multiple displays attached to the system. The redesign makes it easier to find the required options, and the overall interface looks quite clean.
![][7]
A new change display dialog was also showcased that looks minimal and easy to use.
![][8]
**When to Expect:** My best bet would be that this **might be implemented with the GNOME 45 release** set to be introduced later this year. If that doesn't pan out, then as part of a later point release would be my second-best guess.
In case you are wondering, **what's the fuss over Fractional Scaling?**
Well, users with higher resolution displays, such as 2K or 4k, usually suffer badly with conventional scaling that makes the screen elements too big or too small.
To counteract that, Fractional Scaling comes to the rescue by using fractional values to scale any program according to the user's need. This, in turn, also gives better control to the user, as they now have more options to scale through and are not limited to integer values.
I know, I know too much technical jargon if you are hearing about it for the first time! 😵
You may review one of our articles on it for a better outlook on how it currently works:
I must say that this potential redesign of the display settings can prove to be more accessible than before, especially for first-time users.
You may go through the [GitLab issue][9] to dive deeper into this redesign.
Overall, GNOME 45 will feature some visual makeover for a few settings, if not much.

GNOME Plans to Add a New System Panel Setting With a Remote Desktop Option
======
GNOME System settings should be simplified with changes like these. What do you think?
![gnome system settings revamp][1]
GNOME's settings menu has largely remained unchanged for some time now. However, that may change shortly, as a few key changes are being worked on.
No, I am not talking about the [redesigned display options][2], and fractional scaling tweaks that are set to arrive on GNOME soon.
Allow me to show you what I am talking about.
**What's Happening:** A new '**System**' panel will be added to the GNOME settings menu to **house various important settings** under a single umbrella for easy access.
So, settings such as **Region & Language**, **Date & Time**, **Users**, **About**, and **Remote Desktop options** (new) will be moved into the singular '**System**' panel.
This was [proposed][3] by GNOME's [Allan Day][4], a few months back, where he showcased a mockup of how the new panel would look.
![system panel mockup for gnome][5]
The new 'System' panel does look quite resourceful; it houses all the essential options one would expect from such a settings panel.
Well, you see, work on this has already begun thanks to [**GSoC**][6]contributor [Gotam Gorabh][7] who has been pushing code for the new 'System' panel since last week.
He shared progress on how the new panel looks like:
![gnome system panel progress][8]
In its current state, it's in a very bare-bones condition. But, this will get better as development progresses.
His most [recent merge][9] was for integrating the new '**Remote Desktop**' option page into the 'System' panel.
Here's what that looks like:
![gnome remote desktop settings progress][10]
I must say, this looks pretty impressive 👀
This should enable users to access/control any computer or desktop environment remotely from any location.
🚧 However, [Felipe Borges][11] from GNOME mentioned that this change for Remote Desktop is not needed at the moment but later as part of the goal for gsoc internship. For now, the Remote Desktop dialog you find under GNOME's sharing option in system settings will be copied to the new System panel implementation.
**When to Expect:** If you were to follow Gotam's [GSoC proposal][12] for this undertaking, then I would say by the **end of August would be my best bet** for the work to complete.
And guess what? **GNOME 45** is scheduled to be released around **20th September 2023**. Maybe we will see this included then or as part of a point release 😉
Until then, we can only wait and watch. For more details on the contributor's work for GNOME, you can follow his [Medium page][13].
_💬 What do you think about this change for GNOME? Are you happy with some of the upcoming UX changes coming to GNOME?_

OpenGL 3.1 is Now Available in Asahi Linux, Boosting Graphics Performance
======
**Asahi Linux team unveils “Game-Changing” upgrade: OpenGL 3.1 is now available for enhanced graphics performance.**
The Asahi Linux team has unveiled an exciting upgrade for Asahi Linux systems: the highly anticipated OpenGL 3.1 support. This leap in graphics drivers surpasses the previous OpenGL 2.1 and OpenGL 3.0 versions, significantly boosting gaming experiences and overall application functionality. Additionally, the team has announced the elevation of OpenGL ES 2.0 support to OpenGL ES 3.0, opening doors to a whole new level of possibilities.
Back in December, the Asahi team provided a sneak peek into the future with an early screenshot of SuperTuxKart’s deferred renderer in action on Asahi. This demonstration showcased the use of OpenGL ES 3.0 features, such as multiple render targets and instancing, which led to enhanced lighting effects that truly bring the game to life. Now, Asahi Linux users can engage themselves in SuperTuxKart and enjoy its advanced lighting as intended.

It’s important to note that these drivers are still experimental and have yet to fully comply with the OpenGL or OpenGL ES specifications. Users are advised to opt for the `-edge` packages to access the work-in-progress drivers. However, it’s crucial to acknowledge that some bugs may be present during this phase. For comprehensive instructions on driver installation, you may check out the [prior post][2] from the team.
This release also introduces many new functionality within OpenGL 3.0, 3.1, and OpenGL ES 3.0. The highlights include the introduction of multiple render targets, multisampling, transform feedback, and texture buffer objects, among other exciting features.
The Asahi team has even more in store for the Asahi Linux community. While OpenGL ES 3.0 presents notable advancements over ES 2.0, the team’s work-in-progress branch is nearing the completion of OpenGL ES 3.1 support, which will enable the utilization of compute shaders.
The ultimate objective for the Asahi Linux team is to develop a Vulkan driver capable of running modern games seamlessly. Although this goal is still some distance away, the foundations laid by Vulkan 1.0 requirements align closely with OpenGL ES 3.1, facilitating the translation of their work into Vulkan.
Excitingly, the Asahi team has already commenced work on Vulkan, promising an exciting future for the Asahi Linux ecosystem.
If you are running Asahi Linux, you can get this upgrade by running the below command from the terminal.
```
sudo pacman -Syu
```

Firefox 114 Introduces Streamlined Bookmark Searching and Improved DNS Management
======
**Introducing Firefox 114, which brings better bookmarks and DNS management.**
![Firefox 114][1]
Mozilla has released the latest version of its popular web browser, Firefox 114, packed with many exciting new features and enhancements. Among the highlights of this release is the newly added user interface (UI) that allows for easy management of the DNS over the HTTPS exception list.
Searching bookmarks has never been easier! Users can now conveniently search for bookmarks directly from the Bookmarks menu, which can be accessed by simply adding the Bookmarks menu button to the toolbar. This streamlined functionality enhances the browsing experience and makes bookmark organization a breeze.
![Search bookmark is now available in toolbar button][2]
Furthermore, Firefox 114 allows users to restrict searches to their local browsing history. By selecting the Search history option from the History, Library, or Application menu buttons, users can narrow down their searches to specific browsing sessions, ensuring quick and efficient retrieval of desired information.
Mac users are in for a treat with the latest release, as Firefox now enables video capture from cameras in all supported native resolutions. This exciting addition means that users can now record videos in resolutions higher than the standard 1280×720, opening up a whole new world of content creation and communication possibilities.
Another noteworthy enhancement in Firefox 114 is the option to reorder extensions listed in the extensions panel. This feature gives users greater flexibility in organizing their extensions, enabling them to prioritize and manage their browsing experience more effectively.
In a bid to bolster security and authentication capabilities, Mozilla has extended FIDO2 / WebAuthn authenticator support to macOS, Linux, and Windows 7 users. By utilizing USB connections, users can now enjoy the benefits of these advanced authenticators, including fully passwordless logins, although a PIN must be set on the authenticator to access certain advanced features. This addition strengthens Firefox’s commitment to user privacy and security.
Mozilla has also expanded the availability of Pocket Recommended content. Users in France, Italy, and Spain can now enjoy a curated selection of engaging and informative articles, further enriching their browsing experience and ensuring they stay up to date with the latest news and trends.
In addition to these exciting new features, Firefox 114 brings several changes that web developers will appreciate. The Copy as cURL feature in the Network panel has been enhanced, now supporting the –compressed argument. This improvement simplifies the process of copying network requests as cURL commands, enabling developers to analyze and troubleshoot network-related issues more effectively.
The Accessibility Inspector has received a significant upgrade, accurately recognizing all ARIA roles such as banner, main, navigation, and contentinfo, among others. Firefox 114 also introduces support for the CSS Cascading Level 4 supports() syntax for @import rules.
With Firefox 114, Mozilla continues delivering an exceptional browsing experience while empowering users and developers.
